The key to successful pet collecting is persistence and staying ahead of content. There will always be newly released pets, and once you start to fall behind on collecting the newest ones, you start to become overwhelmed and discouraged.
As long as you can keep up with the latest pets, you'll be fine. Either that or if you have tons of money in game and irl that you are willing to part with. Everything's usually easier with money. :T
