collecting more than one of each pet?

It seems like there is a lot of overlap between some pets in a family. Take Cats for example. As near as I can tell, aside from rarity, a Black Tabby Cat is equivalent to a Bombay Cat or a Cornish Rex Cat. Are all 17 felines functionally equivalent?
Does this mean that pets in the same family with the same 6 abilities are functionally equivalent, or are there a different stat budgets, aside from rarity or the "breed number"?
Follow-up: are there pets that are functionally unique and are they worth collecting more than one? If so, which ones?
I was trying to collect multiples, but then I hit the 500 limit really fast. I'm trying to avoid reaching the 650 cap, well, unless I somehow did manage to collect one of everything. Before I purge the ranks though, I wish I knew a) what stat priority is ideal for any given pet and if there are any pets that defy the only collect one mentality?
