Pet PVP (help)

Postby Jennly » October 10th, 2017, 11:46 am

This is a *huge* ask I know. I have never done pet pvp but man would I love the 200 reward pet.

Here's my issue, I have a mental/medication issue that can make it very hard for me to focus, especially on things like this.

So big ask, is there any pet team anyone can recommend that doesn't require a lot of concentration? As an example my favorite pve team is the XTs because can just mindlessly use tantrum most of the time.

I know I will loose a bunch that's totally fine, I don't mind chipping away slowly.

A nice bonus would be a team that wins or looses relatively quickly, I would feel bad if I was wasting the other teams time. I don't know if that's possible though

Thanks very much friends <3

I hate to suggest it, but another pet that doesn't really require any kind of focus is Bone Serpent. You choose Bone Barrage, Call Darkness, Nocturnal Strike. After the battle starts, you press the buttons 1,2,3 in that order, then repeat it every turn unless all moves are on cooldown, in which case you can pass or switch pets.
Why does it work? Well, Bone Serpent has a very high power stat, combined with three different attack "families" and the ability to break shields etc. It's also really good versus the natural counter for Undead, aquatics. It's usually considered one of the most powerful pets in pvp. The only real drawback is that all it's abilities are cooldown-based and as such have to be used in the correct order to keep the Bone Serpent able to act for as long as possible. Luckily, if you press 1, 2, 3 every turn, you will always automatically choose the "correct" move.
Now, a disclaimer - It's obviously not always best to do the moves in that order, and you will probably lose games that you wouldn't lose otherwise if you keep doing it. There are some nuances to it, but if you genuinely have problems to focus, you should still do pretty well by doing that.

Other teams that don't require a lot of focus or thinking are the teams that usually are run by bots, like three Nexus Whelpling with Tail Sweep, Mana Surge, Arcane Magic, where you can usually do the same, but press 3, 2, 1 instead - you even can take a three-turn break after Mana Surging. Almost no decision-making involved, you basically flip the coin when queueing up to see if you can or can't beat the opponent's team.

Last but not least, there are the pets with the Acid Rain + Dreadful Breath combo where you basically do the same thing, either use Acid Raid or Dreadful Breath if Acid Rain is on cooldown, then wait for 3 turns while your pet is stuck in Dreadful Breath. Those pets are Blightbreath, Droplet of Y'Shaarj and Everliving Spore. Most of those pets aren't cheap on the gold-front though, although for availability reasons.

Having said all that - i'm not a friend of using a strategy that doesn't involve decision-making and i commented pretty strongly on it on my videos and will do it again in the future. This post doesn't mean that i'm supporting these strategies, but they exist and not talking about them would be wrong, especially if they can help you get the achievement even with those issues you talked about. Hope you enjoy your Direhorn :)

Hiya,

I’ve given this some thought and I will recommend a couple of teams one with pets that should be easy to get hold of cheaply or quickly the other one that should give ok wins back.

1st team Blightbreath (1, 2, 1), Jademist Dancer (1, 2, 1) and H/H Spirit Crab (1, 1, 2) . This should be fairly easy to get the jademist dancer may be the hardest one to get.

Start with Blightbreath use the priority acid rain > dreadful breath > toxic smoke.

Jademist dancer start with acidic rain then just use the other abilities whenever healing if needed.

Spam surge on the crab use Rot if opponent is magic pet.

2nd team Fledgling Warden Owl (1, 1, 1), Fledging Warden Owl (1, 1, 1) and Vengeful Porcupette (2, 1, 1)

Start with Fledgling Warden Owl: Priorities Darkness > Nocturnal Strike > Savage Talon

Repeat with second Owl

Vengeful Porcupette: Powerball until faster > spirit Spikes > flank

Just as a warning you will get countered so I’d suggest not using these combos all the time and perhaps only getting a couple wins every so often as teams like this are poorly thought of by experienced pet battlers. You will find yourself getting constantly beaten by these players who will deliberately set up teams to counter your strategy.

Drlambda and Rosqo, you are both terrible people for publicising those teams. /fingerwag

Oh well, since we're doing this .... :P

Jennly, I see you have all the pets. So here's another suggestion.

Murkalot
Blackfuse Bombling
Twilight Clutch-Sister

Righteous Inspiration -> Armageddon will do nearly 1900 damage to the opposing team if not countered. Follow that with Twilight Clutch-Sister's Twilight Meteorite, and then it's just about picking up the pieces. If your Armageddon is blocked, you lose; if not, it's not even a battle.

You could also Mix'n'Match unthinking strats. Run a Weebomination's Cleave until it dies, then Corpse Explosion. Throw in a Nexus Whelpling. Finish with a Droplet of Y'sharrj with Cleansing rain/Dreadful Breath. AoE was nerfed, but it still takes a fight to get past something like that.

That addon that lets you bot pet battles more-or-less legally tdPetBattleScript is something you could use. It would be ideal for something like 3 Nexus Whelplings. Just set it up for whatever team, and keep pressing the same key. Eventually you will get there.

You will want to make a few teams, and switch between them. As soon as the people in the queue know you are running X, they will immediately create teams to counter you.

All superb and simple ideas above. ^
(I’d suggest the Nexus team and you can basically watch Netflix while you’re doing it)

Three other single pet suggestions...

Curious Wolvar Pup
-Lay trap down
-Bite til you’re dead

Lil Ragnaros
-Lay trap down
-Sulfer Smash til you’re dead

Iron Starlette
-WindUp + Supercharge + WindUp Combo

That may be over-simplifying things, but this strat can get you some wins for sure.

I was thinking about this, afterwards.

When I first saw that addon that plays pre-recorded moves for you, I wondered whether it would be practical to find a team and a priority that would do well in PvP, but of course I wouldn't use any of these teams because I would not do that to the queue. Xorvasc is basically a PvP team, for example. I did try some teams with a bit more finesse that seemed reasonable, but not with great success.

I see tdPetBattleScripts everywhere now. It belatedly occurs to me to wonder why someone hasn't already provided a list of unthinking-win teams like these as tdPetBattleScripts. Is it because so few people even look at PvP that it hasn't occurred to anyone yet?

Thing is, Drlambda is right in saying that these strategies exist, and as long as the game permits them, how can we pretend they don't exist? Mind you, I'd like to pretend that Bone Serpents don't exist either. :P

It’s can actually be really difficult to counter these dumb mindless team. Like triple darkness/Nocturnal Strike is difficult to counter whilst maintaining a balanced team.

Sunlight/photosynthesis, fast haunt/imp/teroclaw and trap teams are all other setups that can all be played like a robot but are difficult to counter without specific teams.

I know you can counter these strategies but to do so requires a lot more thought and better play.

The effort vs reward is just out of line.
