Breed number?

Hello!

New to pet battles, but not to pet collecting.

Before pet battles came out I had the most collected pets on my server. I'm a bit late at trying out pet battles, and have really enjoyed collecting the pets. I have tried to collect rares only. I see some ppl talking about breed numbers? Can someone please explain this to me? I don't see anything about it.

Also, is there anyway to tell the quality of the pet before entering into a battle? I seem to have read something where someone said they could.

As far as I know you have to engage a wild pet to see breed and quality.
