5.4 Wild Battle XP change?

Pre-5.4, I was able to take a level 20-24 pet into the Vale and get between 900 and 1k XP battling the level 25 water pets (attack with the carry, then slaughter with my Wildhammer Gryphon Hatchling). Now, though, my pets are only getting about 550 xp, with the safari hat. Are level 25 pets eating XP again, or did they nerf the wild pet XP and I just miss that in the patch notes?

I always found it to depend on the level of the carry pet. A level 24 only gets around 350 xp from a wild battle iirc (that may be with safari hat only - no food. Not sure on exact numbers but I know it's 300-something). Haven't tested since patch I'm afraid, but the 1k number sounds kinda high to me.

I put Dazer's formula (created in February) into a spreadsheet, and I show a level 24 pet against a team of level 25 pets, with Safari Hat equipped, would get 544.5 XP.

Here's the math:

plvl = 10 (your pet)
diff = 25 - 10 = 15 (difference between enemy pet and your pet)
hat_bonus = 1.1
number_of_pets_bonus = 2.5 (for enemy teams of 3)
tamer_bonus = 5 (1 if wild pet aka no tamer bonus)
XP = (45 + 5 * plvl) * (1 + 0.2 * diff) * hat_bonus * number_of_pets_bonus * tamer_bonus = 5225 points.

Substituting for level 24 and no tamer bonus, you'd have
XP = (45+5*24) * (1+0.2*1)*1.1*2.5*1
XP = (45+120)*1.2*1.1*2.5
XP = 165*1.2*1.1*2.5
XP = 544.5

XP gains of 544.5 is in line with your observed "about 550" XP, so I don't think they've changed anything. I'm guessing the 900-1000 XP gains you were seeing must have had some sort of pet food bonus, and a level 20 pet. Changing the formula to add a 1.5 modifier for the pet treat (50% bonus) and based on a level 20 pet, I get an XP gain of 996.875.

About 500 sounds right for using the hat in the Vale. Lower levels you get 900-1000, but not towards the end. This isn't any different than before.
