NPC creatures killing wild pets!

:x Wow, I am so annoyed with some of the most recent changes. It's supposed to be a good thing that if you forfeit a battle the wild pet no longer despawns... and again, a good thing that your team loses 10% health each time. I understand the reason for this and accept it as fair. So why is it, as I hunt for the rare I want, and subsequently lose team health. So when I FIND it, I immediately forfeit to give my team the heal it needs to fight..and BAM, a not-so-nearby creature runs over and KILLS it before I can re-engage!! This has happened to me over and over and over again. I even try to kill nearby creatures , SOOO time consuming, but even this does not seem to be a guarantee. Anyone else experiencing this??

I've experienced it... But I recognize it as the nature of the beast (Hehe, I'm punny). The intent is to make people fight the unwanted pets they're after, rather than just nuking them outside of battle. Frustrating? It sure can be. A big problem? Not in my terribly inconsequential opinion.

I've never seen an NPC kill a battle pet. o_o Granted, I finished the bulk of my rare wild pet hunting pre-5.1 so maybe something changed. It seems like a strange thing to happen though. :/

This was happening during the beta, and I think it's unintended. Wolves and bears would run over and nom the pet that I wanted to battle. :(

Perhaps a bug that showed up with the changes in 5.2?

My best guess would be that the battle pet flag for the creature isn't being registered or applied fast enough when it's respawned after you exit a fight. So the beast AI goes "critter! can kill? must say no if not", server isn't fast enough in going "no! player only kill!" and so the beast goes "YUM!!" runs over and kills that rare you finally found. It is quite annoying.

Should add I have seen this happen and I've only seen it happen after I exit a pet battle - outside of that I'll see little pet battle squirrels happily play next to wolves. So the normal kill/no kill is working fine, it's just something when you flee a pet battle that's going wrong.

I was hunting an upgrade for my Fjord Rat the other day and just as I lined up a clear Pet Battle area, swoosh, a bird swept in and killed my target. There were only three up in the pits below UP! I just "know" that was my Rare one too. lol It was even more annoying than having the Seagulls destroy a fishing pool after fishing pool in the Dread Wastes. So now we have to look left, right and up.

Thanks for the replies they are very appreciated...I suspect that the response by Isheldur is a reasonable answer as I would hate to believe the programmers would intentionally do such a thing which would completely UNDO the the 'battle pet preservation' changes they just created. I'm using hot keys for the team heal and/or instant attack spell in order to save the life of my future pet! Still aggrivating but... GAME ON! Happy hunting folks :)

I was getting too on the Fjord Rats yesterday. It was like a race to get to the pet before the hawk did. I eventually started killing the hawks. I was afraid to forfeit any of the battles, since the hawks were going after every rat that spawned, regardless of battle pet or critter.
