Killing Graves - The Redemption Story of a Fiendish Imp

Posted: June 10th, 2016, 2:59 pm
by Virgilioar
The [pet]Fiendish Imp[/pet] had been destined for greatness. Versatile and resourceful, the PVP potential of this nether demon, previously shadowed by Warlocks, exploded in when it came to setting ablaze its fellow companions. He dominated every arena, eloquently controlling battlefields lined with the most fearsome of enemies, successfully coming back from the gravest of injuries until that fateful day when gravity itself renamed [pet]Graves[/pet] challenged his reign. However, from the brink of irrelevance rose a [pet]Fiendish Imp[/pet] and his brave companions to challenge the new status quo.

The team (Nickname - Pet):

V Shade - [pet]Nightshade Sproutling[/pet]
V Rook - [pet]Fiendish Imp[/pet]
V Desecrate - [pet]Ghastly Kid[/pet]

If I fought on a different team, it did not affect the score.

Final Standing:
100-18
84% Win

Considering this is a specific population (people who name their pets), I also provide PVP Pet Battles won at max level:
-May 15 - 9605
-May 20 - 9743
-May 30 - 9968
-June 5 - 10,092
-June 10 - 10,171

Good Morning Virgil,

Im looking at your team as I always try to experiment with strong counter teams.

This is a counter to Graves running Consume Corpse build correct?

Im guessing its usage is:

set up Haunt
set up Immolation

Darkness to inhibit consume corpse benefit

rotate to keep up DoTs
use Hoof vs undead
primary tank w/Sprout keep up Call Darkness & Blinding Poison

Is this the correct utility of the team?

Dont see any of my teams on the growing list, but ive run into several variants of Moe/Larry/Curly teams. This seems to be a more and more popular naming choice lol.

Virgilioar laid out this team, with [ability]Nature's Ward[/ability] on the Sproutling.
Virgilioar wrote:V Shade - [pet]Nightshade Sproutling[/pet]
Lash | Nature's Ward | Blinding Poison

V Rook - [pet]Fiendish Imp[/pet]
Burn | Immolation | Nether Gate

V Desecrate - [pet]Ghastly Kid[/pet]
Hoof | Ethereal | Haunt
I tried this in a chunk of matches leading up to the 1000, and found the heal instead of the usual Darkness very freeing, giving me a benefit from backlining the Sproutling when I swap in the Kid to Haunt or the Imp to force swap or refresh Immolate.

Thank you Grainne,

I KNEW that team was very very familiar but I browse so many websites for teams I couldnt begin to remember from where lol.

Of all places, it comes from my most favorite recent team thread - I should be ashamed for not remembering considering the time ive spent on the two murkalot teams posted from there >.<

Gonna hit the Equilibrium thread again and make sure ive got this team loaded properly with correct strat notes.

Don't run with [ability]Call Darkness[/ability], use [ability]Nature's Ward[/ability] instead. The trick to beating [pet]Graves[/pet] is forcing him to either space his abilities out to avoid your [ability]Blinding Poison[/ability] and [ability]Nether Gate[/ability] OR - when you will get hit by the AoEs and there is nothing you can do - make sure [pet]Ghastly Kid[/pet] is out and using [pet]Hoof[/pet]. It's very important to also time your [ability]Blinding Poison[/ability] to the [pet]Graves[/pet] AoE. The idea is you will get hit by the first two AoE (assuming opponent is running [ability]BONESTORM[/ability] and [ability]Grave Destruction[/ability]) while your [pet]Fiendish Imp[/pet] applies [ability]Immolation[/ability] and either pushes out [pet]Graves[/pet] (especially if he does not AoE to start and instead uses [ability]Skull Toss[/ability] or [ability]Consume[/ability]) or is swapped out for the [pet]Ghastly Kid[/pet]. Let me go over this step by step:

IF [pet]Graves[/pet] opens with AoE to your [ability]Immolation[/ability], you swap out to the [pet]Ghastly Kid[/pet] next and start [ability]Hoof[/ability] to hurt [pet]Graves[/pet] as much as possible before he is swapped out. IF in the background there is a [pet]Mechanical Pandaren Hatchling[/pet] or some other pet with a defensive ability like [ability]Decoy[/ability], you might want to predict the opponent's swap and try to get a [ability]Haunt[/ability] in, especially when [pet]Graves[/pet] has [ability]Grave Destruction[/ability] on cool down. This makes it so if the opponent does not swap, you can go on your [pet]Nightshade Hatchling[/pet] and use your heal followed by Blinding Poison on [pet]Graves[/pet]' next set of AoE to buy your [pet]Fiendish Imp[/pet] more time to heal. You can follow the [ability]Blinding Poison[/ability] with a swap to [pet]Fiendish Imp[/pet] and push out the [pet]Graves[/pet] who should be low on health and will hopefully die in the background if [ability]Haunt[/ability] was applied.

The lesson to learn here is that the key to beating [pet]Graves[/pet] is keeping him in the background and making sure when he comes out he is either blinded or being hoofed to death.

Either I've met a real wall or I was too spontaneous in that battle.

A guy has run [pet]Graves[/pet], [pet]Droplet of Y'shaarj[/pet] and [pet]Scourged Whelpling[/pet].

That [ability]Acid Rain[/ability] severely weakened the sproutling. :v

As you can figure out, besides the Standard Graves' Bomb all was based on [ability]Dreadful Breath[/ability].

But indeed, it's an interesting team. I've seen many moments when pets were just supposed to die, but still stood tall with <100 HP.

EDIT: Also beware of [ability]Sandstorm[/ability]. The damage reduction is treated as a buff, not a debuff, so the weather nerfs even attacks from an elemental.

This is difficult because you have to go fully on the offensive while keeping up most CDs. One strategy is to not use [ability]Haunt[/ability] against this composition. Burst his pets down making sure [pet]Fiendish Imp[/pet] has [ability]Immolation[/ability] up 100% of the time and fighting mainly with [pet]Nightshade Sproutling[/pet] unless [pet]Graves[/pet] is out at which point you [ability]Hoof[/ability] away. It is tricky and like Biscuit mentions below, it all comes down to proper juking and bluffing!

Biscuit wrote:The problem you run into with Blinding Poison and Nether Gate is that it's too easy to get juked. It turns into a guessing game at that point and, if guessed incorrectly, there goes your advantage.
That and the obvious dependency on speed can make blind and gate minimal threats.
The idea behind this originally was to create a team that could take ANY team, this is why we rely so much on controlling the fight. Your comment on speed, however made me think: why not push for power and try to end fight quicker? Been field testing a [pet]Murkidan[/pet] variation since then which is tricky but promising (with [pet]Eye Beam[/pet] in case you were wondering). It also gets around the overall weakness to Critter Type due to the Elemental Type offensive abilities of the original version. I am looking forward to fixing these issues!

This is a strong team. The only time I have trouble is against Anubisath Idol. I frequently seem to get someone who runs 3x Idols with 3x sandstorm. Sandstorm completely negates Immolation, so the Imp can't heal in the back row. I had to turn to a Graves team to take that team down.

If this happens you run [pet]Nightshade Sproutling[/pet] making sure to only swap to the Fiendish Imp in order to push out an [pet]Anubisath Idol[/pet] that has the [ability]Haunt[/ability] applied. This is tricky now, you have to:

1) Make sure you swap to the Ghastly Kid ONLY AFTER HE USES [ability]Deflection[/ability] so you can get a [ability]Haunt[/ability] in.
2) Only use the [pet]Fiendish Imp[/pet] to allow some rounds for the [pet]Nightshade Sproutling[/pet] to heal.
3) If he can't hit you ([ability]Nether Gate[/ability], [ability]Blinding Poison[/ability], [ability]Ethereal[/ability], [ability]Haunt[/ability]) he can't heal. This seems obvious and irrelevant but that leads me too...
4) TIME! This is an easy fight to win because you have more HPS and DPS than he does thanks to your defensive abilities (mentioned above) but it takes a while and you have to allow for the [pet]Nightshade Sproutling[/pet] to heal while the others get in quick damage!

Example:

We start with [pet]Nightshade Sproutling[/pet] and say 3 rounds of [ability]Sandstorm[/ability] left. You use [ability]Blinding Poison[/ability] and he misses.

2 rounds of [ability]Sandstorm[/ability] left, you swap to [pet]Ghastly Kid[/pet], hopefully he will have used [ability]Deflection[/ability] thinking you will try to hit him and not seeing the swap.

1 round of [ability]Sandstorm[/ability] left you [ability]Haunt[/ability] and enter the [pet]Fiendish Imp[/pet].

0 rounds of [ability]Sandstorm[/ability], [ability]Nether Gate[/ability] and in comes another [pet]Anubisath Idol[/pet]

Now, we know this new [pet]Anubisath Idol[/pet] will likely [ability]Sandstorm[/ability] so instead of fighting it we hit him HARD before he does to further reduce damage on the [pet]Nightshade Sproutling[/pet]. Then swap to [pet]Nightshade Sproutling[/pet], Blinding Poison, heal back up, a couple hits, rinse repeat. It's tricky because [ability]Sandstorm[/ability] seems like a huge deal, but it's also a damage reduction for you so the playing field is level in that sense.

That's when I roll out Droplet, Scourge Whelp & Weebomb.
Surprisingly, it can often out-AOE a Graves squad.

Got any "lazy"-esque teams, Virgil?
Who does not love some mindless keyboard bashing? I have a couple you might like. The thing about these teams is that though they may win a lot, there are certain situations where they simply can't win. Either way, my favourite of these is (my name for it) "Wild" and it has two variations:

[pet]Trunks[/pet]
[pet]Nightshade Sproutling[/pet] OR [pet]Murkalot[/pet]
[pet]Graves[/pet]

The rotation is [ability]Grave Destruction[/ability], [ability]BONESTORM[/ability], [ability]Avalanche[/ability], [ability]BONESTORM[/ability], [ability]Grave Destruction[/ability].

The [pet]Nightshade Sproutling[/pet] variation is much more sturdy assuming you don't get juked. You can use [pet]Murkalot[/pet]'s [ability]Righteous Inspiration[/ability] for a second [ability]Avalanche[/ability] after that rotation because they never see that coming and usually by then one of their pets is pretty dead. You could use it at the beginning too into a [ability]BONESTORM[/ability] and switch up the rotation throwing in an [ability]Ethereal[/ability] or a [ability]Skull Toss[/ability] as a filler, especially if there is a [pet]Graves[/pet] on the other end. However, if there is a Graves and the other guy knows what he is doing, it's a tough fight because LITERALLY all it takes to beat this team is that enemy [pet]Graves[/pet] out 100% of the time running his full rotation and leaving you pretty hurt. Play it wisely!

It can be a little bit easier, though also a bit more RNG dependent since he used Rupture instead of Deflect.

Off-topic, but speaking of lazy and [ability]Dreadful Breath [/ability] reminded me.

I've levelled a couple of characters recently, and it's often convenient to drop in to some place like Halfhill to grind that next half-level.

A team with [pet]Droplet of Y'shaarj[/pet] and a couple of [ability]Dreadful Breath [/ability] users is extremely low-neuron. :)

[ability]Dreadful Breath [/ability] goes on for over 20 seconds, so just hitting one button every 20-25 seconds gives you lots of leisure to do other things while obliterating the wild pets. You don't have to think at all. [ability]Cleansing Rain[/ability] isn't really required if you don't have a Droplet, and Humanoids like [pet]Curious Oracle Hatchling[/pet] take weak damage from critters in Halfhill. I find I can go through several battles, letting a pet or two die, before needing to heal.

Try it next time you're grinding character XP. Once you get the rhythm, it's very lazy. [ability]Dreadful Breath [/ability] is getting a nerf in Legion, but I'm sure it will still work well enough.
