so 100% isnt 100% in pet battles?

I had a really jacked experience in yesterdays pet battles.

I had a darkness/nocturnal strike team for a while. I set up Darkness successfully, the weather was never changed. I double checked my tooltip as I always do before commiting to an attack and I read 100% hit chance active. I looked at my Opponent's buffs and saw no shields, deflections, or anything that stated any kind of effect on hit or being hit chance - yet my Nocturnal Strike failed. Several times.

Ive also noted all day yesterday, my 90% hit attacks literally never landed. 90% means 9 hits land out of 10? I was lucky it seemed to hit once out of 15-20 swings with these attacks. I had to walk away from the game. Seriously does anyone have rng THIS miserable?

Has anyone got any explanation why 100% hits fail to land for me?

RNG is RNG. We always seem to remember when we get a bad streak, but rarely the times when it is the other way around.

As for missing Nocturnal Strike with Darkness active - Darkness applies a -10% hit penalty to everyone. Including Nocturnal Strike.

It would be less frustrating if the tooltip wasnt deceptive. It starts saying "50% hit chance and Base hit chance increased to 100% if target Blinded" Then when Darkness is active it changes to "40% hit chance and Base hit chance increased to 100% if target Blinded"

That base hit should read 90%. Seeing the 50 drop to 40 but the 100 remain 100 leads one to believe the attack is immune to the weather effect as well as benefiting from it (imo)

No, it's okay.

"Base" means "before you have accuracy modifiers applied to yourself", and the Darkness weather is such a debuff. So you start with 100%, then Darkness takes 10% away.

Note that target may be blinded by means other than the Darkness weather, like a [ability]Blinding Poison[/ability] and you keep 100% in these cases.

Also take care that Elementals are completely immune to Darkness results, so they are neither blinded nor having their accuracy reduced. Your [ability]Nocturnal Strike[/ability] has only 40% hit chance against them.

Hope that helps. :)

Thats great info Paladance, thank you. I honestly didnt think I had to apply calculation to the base chance when the other figure on the tooltip was being pre-calculated for display.

This is an eye opener thats gonna change a lot for me. I had no idea I was looking at some abilities in completely the wrong way.

The blindness/nocturnal strike advantage over darkness/nocturnal strike is clear now and I think ill be restructuring some of my teams. I personally have a really bad time with any 90% hit chance ability in both pvp and pve. Its the worst on my Anubiseth Idol. He misses constantly (with the added frustration of losing a racial heal) forcing me to redo trainers like Aki the chosen 3-5 times before being able to beat her with popular 2-pet/carry strats.

No problem! :)

There's also another way to boost your NS -- that's a [ability]Rain Dance[/ability], as the modifiers are based on percentage points rather that the multiplicative math.

Several WoD flying pets have both abilities -- sadly Ability Tag for some reasons looks for one ability, not for an entire moveset, but I can tell you that they're [pet]Junglebeak[/pet],[pet]Axebeak Hatchling[/pet], [pet]Bloodbeak[/pet], [pet]Fruit Hunter[/pet].
For that particular combo, aswell as for general purposes you need a P/P breed (sadly there is no P/S one).

I was a noob and tried using this combo on an elemental and didn't realize until after the battle why my hit chance was so bad. I swear I've made every mistake in the book, and then I find a new one to make.

What kind of pet did your opponent have out? Any elemental pet is unaffected by the weather so darkness doesn't count against them. And being it is darkness for you and nocturnal strike then hits with then-10 rebuff for you so it hits elementals at a 40% rate. Elementals were and are the counter for darkness teams

I was fighting mostly the Meta and variants. All undead and mech teams. I thought I was at 100% hit when I was actually at 90% and just having horrible rng and missing back to back to back.

Been there done that!

I was quietly ranting to myself that it wasn't working blah blah and then someone politely informed me it was an elemental :?
