Initially I was under the impression the worst case is 4 misses at most before it reaches 100% trapping chance. But when I was trying to catch high level pets with self healing like various frogs and turtles, it seems to take a lot longer. This is what I get:
Miss
Miss
Miss
mob heals, spank to lower HP
Miss
Miss
mob heals, spank to lower HP
Miss
Miss
Miss
mob heals, spank to lower HP
Miss
Miss
mob heals, spank to lower HP
Miss
Trapped!!
I get the impression that 25% increased chance are reset if they aren't used in successive round or if the pet's hp goes above trap threshold (35%)
Trap: miss, miss, miss, 8x miss???
Re: Trap: miss, miss, miss, 8x miss???
I'm under the impression that the bonus isn't being applied correctly. My partner's thrown a trap ~five times in succession (he says he's usually throwing it between three and five), so it can't be that healing/non-successive throws are resetting it. A lot of people on the WoW forums are pretty unhappy with this, too, since the ridiculously high chance to miss is causing wipes at higher levels :/

Re: Trap: miss, miss, miss, 8x miss???
I'm no expert when it comes to theorcrafting or WoW mathematics, but I believe the 20% increase is multiplicative (is that the correct term?). 20% increase on the chance you had before, rather than a flat 20% more each time.
Anyway, rather than multiplying 20 x 5 attempts to get 100%, it's 20% of the previous product. So for example, let's say there's a 10% chance to trap a pet (I really don't know the exact value, but let's just pretend for the sake of this example ).
20% of 10% = 2%. Add that to the 10% and you get 12%. The trap fails, so you try again. 20% of 12% = 2.4%. Add that to the 12% and you get 14.4%. Continue that same pattern until you're either successful with the trap or reach 100%.
Also, it's possible that whenever a pet heals and its health goes above the necessary value required to trap a pet, the trap chance resets.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong!

Re: Trap: miss, miss, miss, 8x miss???
If the pet heals and you have to attack it again, it resets the trapping. It did once take me 5 throws to catch a mob that didn't heal, but three seems to be the maximum now that I have the 25% chance trap.
