try the addon "Battle Pet BreedID" - nothing more to say.

I agree. That and battle pet teams is all you'll need!

Or if you don't want to install an addon, you can use this site. Just go the the pet's page and look under Battle Info.

This works too, if slower. :) I did it for the PTR, where I didn't have all my addons. Say you need to know if your Darkshore Cub is a 3 (b/b) or a 4 (p/p). Go to the Darkshore Cub page, then battle info. If you already have this pet, and you're logged in, it's going to default to what *your* pet is. So change things if necessary. Pick your pet's rarity, and move the slider to its level. Then play "match my stats" with the health/power/speed numbers. When everything matches, that's your breed.
