Total Battle Pets increased?

Are we still capped at 1,000 pets? When I hover over "Total Pets" it says "You can have up to 1,000 total pets and 3 of the same pet."
I'm sitting at 1,001 today. Did they increase the number or am I able to be over 1,000 because I have duplicates of some pets?

Completing 30 pet battle quests in the Broken Isles awards you the Pocket Pet Portal, which increases your total pets to 1500.

Some pets are excluded from the limitation, but I can't recall which ones exactly.
Various guesses on that matter involve faction-tied pets merged with counterparts, achievement rewards, pets that can't battle or unique pets.
If there is any certain knowledge, Warcraft Pets could mark a pet as a "ignores total pet maximum limit" or something. (Taken from the PPP description)

Two reasons you could go over your pet limit:
1. Some pets that are auto-learnt (e.g. achievement rewards) are not restricted by the pet limit.
2. Different alts have a different number of pets (Alliance/Horde), so you can reach the 1000 limit on one alt and that will be over 1000 on another.
I suspect 2, as that is more common.
