Pets bought at Auction

Bought my first AH pet a level 24 beast - I am a level 100 - it came into my inventory fine but every time I click on it to transfer it to the pets thingy it errors - Can't add your companion to account. What am I doing wrong? Oh and I only have 41 pets.

Have you leveled a pet to level 24 yet? If not, it won't let you add the pet to your pet journal until you do.

That is probably it. You can't learn a pet that is higher level than your highest level pet you already have so you can't skip leveling up your first pet(s) by buying high level pets.
