For all us OCD collectors, this pet is the second one (the other being the Sky Lantern) that you can't use stones on to level it up. All other non-combat pets can be levelled this way.
The history of colour scheming with this pet has been a source for some confusion.
At release she could come in one of two colour morphs: one that was constantly blue-black, and one that that randomly appeared either blue-black or red each time she was summoned. Several weeks after release all (or just most?) pets already learnt were hotfixed to only appear blue-black, regardless of which version they were originally. However reports still came in of people finding her as a colour-changer. In some cases people reported that after initially appearing red, she changed to blue-black and then never changes to red again.
As of 6.2 mine are now all colour-changers and ill randomly appear in either colour scheme each time they're re-summoned. I'm not sure if any can still appear static blue/black, like when they were released, or if all are colour changers now.
According to the database inside the WoW client, the regular (darker) blue occurs with a 9x higher frequency than the icy blue. Since pet this never appears as a secondary in battle, you'll just have to hunt until you find a primary in the icy colour.
The pet data in the WoW client indicates that the ratio of regular green to green-black Wood Wasps is 99 to 1! So even if you find this pet as a secondary in battle, it may take many battle resets before the black colour shows up.
There are several other Draenor pets where the ratio of colours is 9:1 (such as the Icespine Hatchling where the icy blue is rarer than the darker blue), which makes me wonder if this extra rare one was intentional or a slip of the key by someone at Blizzard.
As far as I can tell this is the only Argent Tourney pet that currently comes in multiple breeds. So be careful that you get the breed you want before applying a stone to it.
Presumably this was unintended. Hopefully they'll fix it.
Snakes appear frequently as secondaries with Water Wavelings (level ~22-23) in Zul'Drak. Since the Water Wavelings spawn in huge numbers, this is a good place to farm them.
If WCPs data are accurate then the red colour variant is unique to this particular pet. The others appear on other wild pets.
Just about every other post here (currently) refers to it changing colours. This bug was fixed in 5.1.
From WCP's data:
- two colours are unique to this pet: the purple with teal spots and the green with red spots
- the brown with yellow spots isn't unique, but the only other source is a trading card pet (albeit a very cheap one)
So if you're trying to collect all possible colours of beetle amongst your pets, those are the two (or three if you don't buy TCG pets) you'd want to go for.
The remaining colour, blue, is also used on the Tol'vir Scarab.
Sadly there are two other colours that don't seem to be available on any battle pets: dark teal/black with purple spots (like npc) and teal with blue spots (like npc).
If WCP's data are correct, then the three colours that this pet comes in are currently all unique to it: White/Yellow, Brown and Dark Red/Black.
So if you want a parrot in every colour, then you really need to use your three slots to capture one of each of these.
As of 5.1 these now also appear as primaries in Utgarde Catacombs. They're also available in white and brown.
They respawn at a fairly high rate. As do all the irritating ghouls down there.
The Veiled Stair is actually fixed now. So they're the same level as elsewhere.
Only found in VEB, from Whitepetal Lake to the waterfall by Mistfall Village. They phase out once you've started the Golden Lotus chain (not sure if a friend can aggro one and pull it out of the phase for you to combat). If you aren't phased, the other issue is you can't start combat while on the water. You have to be lucky that one spawns close enough to click from shore. Luckily they are reported as secondaries in fights with Golden Civets in the same zone.
