Is there a list of pets that have a special ability, i.e., Hearthy here, or the ability to be a cooking fire, or even fun stuff like turning you green or eating critters ? 

You don't HAVE to do the opening quests to get here.  You just have to be an Engineer. 

This takes me back to 1998, when everyone I knew swore they'd never upgrade to DVDs after having so many VHS tapes already.

i'm pretty sure it used to ride a little broom when you flew around.  As of yesterday, though, it just kind of floats awkwardly behind you at a weird angle.  Still one of my favorite pets, but, of course, it's been replaced on my hotbar by whichever one of the two new cats I already unlocked on my main.  I forget which one I have.  I'll have them both by the end of the event, but I'm not farming 3 of each in an attempt to sell them.  Too much other stuff to do right now.

I've been stalking these, have seen about 40 of them by doing the "create a level 1 gnome on many servers" trick, and every single one of them has been grey quality. 

This is the leader of my battle pet team.  As others have stated, he has a heal, a terrific dot (the turret cannon) and he's got moves that work on beasts or other mechanicals, and a really great move against dragonkin.  I can't reccomend him enough. 

I also got this pet today on a non-collector toon. I've seen it drop quite a bit between today and yesterday, so its drop-rate may have been raised. Since it comes in a bag from your first kill of the boss each day, you can no longer offer gold to whoever wins the roll for it. Also, you must be either 84 or 85 and have done the pre-quests to get the boss dungeon queues now. You get one shot at the pet each day per toon, though you can farm the necklaces the boss drops all day if you want.

Remember; you only get him on one toon, not on all the ones you have and all your future toons. So, make sure you pick who you want to have him carefully.
