Notes:

Simply speak to Archmage Vargoth to receive this pet. Vargoth is housed in a secluded spire atop the Violet Citadel within Dalaran. In order to access Vargoth, one must teleport to his location using a tome rewarded by the "Higher Learning" achievement. This achievement entails reading 8 different books about arcane magic that spawn throughout Dalaran. The books appear to be on 3 hour spawn timers and share spawn points with roughly 30 other non-achievement books. Read the Kirin Tor Familiar Guide for the most efficient method to collect this pet.

Note that while a warlock and two others who have access to Vargoth can summon another player to his location, that player cannot receive the pet without having completed the achievement.

OK, this guy's beginning to get a little too "familiar" with me. He's always invading my personal space! And when he doesn't get what he wants, he throws a tantrum and spams Arcane Explosion. Now that I think about it, maybe all entities summoned from the Twisting Nether are behavioral. For example, my warlock friend's Voidwalker is always demanding that she "send him back" (which is really starting to erode her self esteem). Meanwhile, her succubus is busy slapping her own behind and trying to seduce anything that moves. And don't even get me started on her emotionally abusive felguard...

A pet all mages should strive for!

The easiest way to get him is to use server resets to your advantage.

Familiarize yourself with all the spawn points and log out in Dalaran the night before. On maintenance day, log in to bring up the realm selection list. The instant you see your realm come up, log in and make your rounds.

Each book will vanish 3 minutes after it is opened, and there will be other people doing this, so make sure you log in as soon as the realm is up.

I am a big fan of any pets that stand out among the rest, and this one certainly does that. Easily spotted amongst a croud.

The only way i got this was having my char wait by the spawn point while watching movies, that and running my but straight to them all after a server restart.

Keep in mind its also nice to say something in local chat saying if a real one is up, people did it for me so i did it for others :P

Ok several points with this pet that all budding collectors should use:
1. As stated above SERVER RESTARTS!! I can not emphisise this enough it could be 2 more books u get.
2. Whenever in dalran do a quick look round you could have a pleasent suprise.
3. There is no use camping it 4 hours solid if you have 1 book left to camp till the book or a dud comes up. Then is its a dud do heroics of something for the next 3 or 4 hours.
4. Read the guide on the website its great and it will help you.

Shamans can use the sentry totem to keep an eye on a second spawn point.

Another tip to use while looking for the books is to go ahead and read the duds. Most people seem to skip them and the longer those dud books stay, the longer you have to wait until one of the books of magic takes its place.

A plus to this is that you get a book that teleports you to an extremely low traffic area of Dalaran. If Dalaran bogs your computer down and you like to hang out there, this is the place to b

On many servers, there will be a channel called "higherlearning" established by people hunting the books. Join it, because often people will announce in the channel when they find a book.

The books will despawn 3 minutes after being opened, and any number of people can read them in that time. iirc, the books will respawn between 3 and 4 hours after despawning.

If you are a Priest, you can set up Mind Vision macros (finally a use for this spell) targeting specific NPCs near each book. This allows you to stand in one place and cycle through all/some of the books. Once you find your spawn, you can run over to the location and BAM! one less book/macro to scan.

This is the guide I used and found it helped a lot.

The best thing about this striking pet is that when you throw a ball for him to fetch... he doesn't carry it back to you in his hands, but rather in his mouth! Silly creature -- you've got 2 hands with lovely bracelets on -- why not use 'em?

I never thought about using my sentry totem to check a 2nd spawn point! On my shaman's I used my far sight. I just stood on the stairs of the Violet citadel and I far sighted from one place to another. You can't use it indoors, but you can stand outside and use it to look inside a building. It was pretty helpful when I didn't feel like running from one place to another :P

There's so many tips to farming the books for this pet, I can't even begin to list them all.

Once you get him, hang onto the book. It makes a nice place to go hide and escape the Dalaran Lag yet still be able to converse in trade channel.

I got a lot of help from friends and general chat with this one. What I did a lot was that when I knew the last spawn time of a book I went there 3 hours after it to sit and wait. An hour waiting at max isn't so bad especially because usually you get company there too.

I was having really bad luck with the book near Violet Hold seeing 8-9 fakes spawn before the real book. Once had a party there with brewfest keg and picnic basket with some friends and other people who just wanted to join in :)

Also try /join Bookclub when trying to get these book spawns. Your server may also have this channel and people are very friendly when reporting books.

The Arcane Explosion spell that the Kirin Tor Familiar casts is a random script, there is no way to predict how often and how many explosions it will cast (Although as far as I tested it's always 3 to 4 explosions at a time).

Got mine.. with diligent running between the spawn points and with some lucky surprises.. The last one of them being that I was half asleep, decided to leave for sleeping, but decided to check the last missing spawn place "just in case".. no book, I thought "obviously, it would have been too ironic" and while doing so the book spawned in front of me :o

Anyway, another commonly used chatchannel for this pet is "Bookclub" where reals, and by some people also fakes are reported.

Use the buddy system!! My guild leader, his wife and I camped different spots and all 3 of us were in a group. We were able to tell each other when trash spawned and therefore try back in roughly 3 hours (usually did take longer than 3 but always better to be safe than sorry). More than one person can click on the book, in fact I read that 3-4 people could click the book before it would despawn. Don't be greedy! When a book spawns, share the wealth!

I'm most proud of this pet. Took a few days to get all of the correct books. He has pretty colours and is large enough you can actually see him. An achievement a pet and a teleporting book all in one go!?! Yay Dala =)

I got this guy the good ol' non-cheating way: Farming! For months I was running around Dalaran and checking all the spots over and over again. Unless you like to do it the fair way like me, I would agree that you use server resets.

I'm sure the tip about the /join Book Club chat channel is well documented in various guides, so I won't belabour it here, I just wanted to observe that even so it can take quite a while, so if you want this pet, you're really looking at Months of the Book Club... *ducks rotten Tel'Abim bananas*

Please be aware that even after a server restart, not all the higher learning books will spawn, while you may get 1 or maybe 2 if you are lucky, in place of all the other books will be intresting books in their place. Some like "The Mage's Almnac, are very good reads for lore buffs. But many, such as an instruction manual for Blinking, or a Magazine for mages, are simply funny reads and well worth reading, but read quickly, a few are quite long and despawn before you have a chance to finish them

On Azuremyst-US we have a channel titled "bookclub" dedicated to the achieve.

The flavor text on the pet item before you learn it is "Who knew he was so into books?"

Weirdly, I found my last book like ten minutes before a server restart. I think I had that happen another time as well. So, I think it is worth checking spawn locations before server restarts as well.

While I seem to be on the wrong side of the RNG..I have only seen that half full glass on the crate in the Violet Citadel for weeks..
