Upon attaining revered with The Oracles faction in Sholazar Basin, players can purchase a [Mysterious Egg]. Because it's unique, only one egg can be "incubated" at a time. After seven days, the egg becomes lootable as a [Cracked Egg]. Possible loot includes [Aged Yolk], a Green Proto-Drake mount, or one of four vanity pets:

Breanni Says:

Wow, what can I say? This little guy sure is, um... cute? Regardless of his fearsome appearance, he's a must-have for all whelp collectors. And thank your lucky stars that you didn't have to venture into the proto-drake nesting grounds to collect his egg. See? There was a good reason to become friends with The Oracles after all!

Sings a cute little song using the same voice as the baby murlocs found in Zabra'jin (and probably other places too).

The timing does seem to be somewhat random, but I've noticed while doing long fishing grinds that it sings at intervals of 15 minutes... so not every 15 minutes, but it will be 15, 30, 45, 60, etc minutes between songs. Not sure if motion interrupts this timetable or not.

This is awesome to roleplay as your personal mount growing up. Get it while you work on Glory of the Hero achievement.

Eventually your cute little drake will become awesome badass full-grown proto.

Possible habitat include - Northrend rhinos, elks, gnomes and other unfortunate beasts or humanoids in your path.

One of the first pets to fly up in the air with your flying mount, but in my experience never keeps up. I macroed him to come out with my Green Proto Drake, but he was never there at the end of a flight of even moderate length.

A great start; now we need to see proto-drake whelps in all the other colors, too!

@Xau: I believe it used to sing, hence our removal of that info from this pet's profile. From what I recall, they removed it in patch 3.2 because it was an unintended bug. I know I haven't heard this or any of the other Mysterious Egg-hatched pets sing since 3.1.

This little guy had actually made the same sounds and sang the same song that Murky does minus the top hat and cane =) But as Breanni stated this seems to have been removed in a patch.

The Moment I found out that this pet could follow you when you flied, I was ecstatic. My Violet Proto-Drake seems to have taken very well to it, like a mother, especially since the whelp seems to always prefer to fly under its wings and by the legs. It's just so cute that now I have a macro to summon both at once!

I think what is missing though, is he should drop to the ground & walk around, looking bad! The fact that they use their wings when the walk slow was the reason I drooled over proto mounts & was ecstatic with my first one.

I think they upped the following speed for these guys and other flying companions. Although they used to be really slow, when a guildie was helping me reach 80 in Icecrown, I had my little Proto-whelp (who I've named Rusty) out and he summoned his phoenix hatchling, and his phoenix could keep up with him on his swift flier.

I could be wrong, though... I guess I'll find out once I get my training. ^^

A word of advice: don't have this pet out when doing the Hemet quest chain in Sholozar - he really does look just like both the whelps you need to nab and the adults you need to fight. Got very confusing! XD

I really don't see how this drop rate can be one in ten eggs. I have been hatching eggs almost religiously for a year and haven't seen a single proto-drake whelp yet. I finally just bought one.

my fiancé has this pet, got it very early on in our quest for a green proto-drake mount. I still get the usual tickbirds in my eggs at the very most. Very cute little pet and a must have!

I love this little pet! Protodrakes are just so odd and awkward! And adorable! I remember when this little critter used to sing the murloc tune, and the months of him flying off whenever you mounted with him! Hehe, he was just a little shy of flying so fast I suppose.
