Notes:
This whelpling pet may be farmed earlier (level-wise) than other dropped whelplings, making it an excellent farming choice for hardcore pet collectors in their mid-20s.

Breanni Says:

Early on in my collecting career, I farmed for this pet for three days straight. Upon summoning it for the first time, I immediately noticed a problem: whelps fly right in my gnomish field of vision! But I wasn't about to farm for it again. So eventually my troll hunter got her own crimson whelp at auction — it only cost 120 gold... and my peace of mind!

Whelplings are toughies when it comes to farming, and when you begin to attempt this grueling task, having a very large supply of snacks nearby may help a little. Trust me, farming for these lil' guys is definately worth it. Dragon whelps are so cute!

P.S. I highly suggest farming these cuties before Cataclysm strikes...they might go extinct!

Be careful farming for this little guy; mixed among the Crimson, Flamesnorting, and Red Whelps are Lost Whelps. They are shadow-immune whelps with no chance to drop the pet, and as far as I've seen, they don't share spawn locations with the other three.

The farm path is large, but it's not too tedious for anyone of decent level to handle them. Stop by the cave to the east for the Razormaw Matriarch spawn as well!

I would like to include that I did get this thing to drop from a Lost Whelp in the wetlands. They tend to cross over where Crimsons are and the Red Whelps. I'm not sure if this was a fixed thing in a WoW patch. Thought you'd like to know. :)

Hello,
This pet is part of the new special vanity pets tracking achievement which has been data mined from the 3.3 PTR
As Sateena said, "It tracks several of the rarer pets including whelplings, raptor hatchlings, crocolisks and more".

This site is what prompted my Whelp collecting. I saw the "Got Whelp?" shirt, and thought, "Oh noes, I got no whelps." So I went to farm this red one, which I got pretty quickly the first night. So I thought, I better do a hard one next to not get too complacent. So I went to the Emerald prepared for a long grind (didn't drop from adolecents then). Got it the next night. The Dark took 2 days, but then I got the Azure the same night I got the Dark one. So 4 days: 4 whelps! Got Whelp? Yeppers!

90 Kills
Red Whelp Dropped pet
Coords 63.6, 54.3
20-30 mins of farming the area

Happy hunting, large area, avoid Lost Whelps, not a lot of downtime between spawns/travel

Got mine today! I've been farming the whelps along with farming herbs, for a little diversity, and one finally dropped. I think I have a new favourite pet!

After killing 812 i finally got it. this pet might take awhile to farm but make sure that you dont kill the lost whelps, they have no chance of dropping it.

You must be patient with this one. Unlike the other Whelps, these seem the hardest to find. As you may notice, the mobs that drop 'em are the lowest leveled. As Alliance, this will be easier to get, but as Horde, the best route to get to them is to fly to Arathi and run down to the Wetlands.

Overall, they are the most annoying (as Horde) to farm because of the low worth on the leathers and hides. For me, it took me about 5 days to farm, so don't get discouraged and good luck!

This one and dark were easy for me. 24 kills for the dark and 32 for this guy. 199 kills for my emerald...on to my azure.

Crimson Whelpling has a special place in my heart as it was the first one I farmed. I spent days before Christmas during our first year in WoW farming him for my boyfriend (now my husband). I got him very close to Christmas & you can actually wrap it up in the wrapping paper you can get in-game to mail as a gift.

The 4 whelplings are among my favorite pets of all, I've farmed all 4 of them and imo the Red one along with the Black one are the best looking one's.
Hopefully in the near future the Bronze whelp will be available so all the flights can be acquired at last.

I ran into these whelps when I was looking for the cave for the Razormaw Matriarch, I felt pretty lucky. Didn't take long since I'm level 59, not even 300 kills though. Two pets in one day=win :)

Due to my short attention span when farming I only stay for about 15 mins each location before I get bored. Got this cute lil guy on about my 4th 15 minute visit :)

I was able to get this little guy after 1300 kills, but I took the advice of a fellow poster and also hunted for the Razormaw hatchling. It helped break the monotony of 1300 kills!

It could disappear, you never know what Blizz is up to on Cataclysm. I'd also start doing the Loremaster achievements if your into that before Azeroth is revamped.
Also farm lots of pets!

I got this pet in 1 kill. I was just passing by in search of the razormaw matriarch and thought "What the heck? Maybe I'll get lucky", killed a red whelp, and there it was :D.

The easiest of all the whelplings for me. I wasn't really in my pet hunting mood but I went past a group of whelps and killed a few just incase. A few kills later and a tiny Crimson whelpling dropped

So oh soooo many hours of monotony and a few hundred (thousand or so) crimson, red, and flamesnorting whelp kills later, (with a few lost whelps thrown in by accident) it dropped! I was so happy, I couldn't stop smiling. I freaked out so bad when it dropped - the whole house was wondering what the heck was going on. So, as I said, hours and hours of monotony, farming on and off for weeks; but it was ALL WORTH IT! ^_^

This was the first pet I farmed waaaaay back in the day... before any expansion... on my old druid... on my old server. I spent a whole morning farming, but it eventually dropped. I was so proud! I am now trying to get one to drop for my current toon.

I farmed this guy for 2 days, I was at the point where i stopped believing then Pow, it dropped! I loved it :D He stayed with me while I farmed the Emerald whelp, which was a while!

A little Tip, the 3 whelps that drop this (crimson, red, flamesnorting) don't appear to share the same spawn location as the lost whelp (which doesn't drop the whelp), therefore you shouldn't need to kill the lost whelps ;)
