This is likely the first pet a novice engineer will make. The recipe is easy to find at auction, as are the parts. I always thought this little guy looked like he'd been assimilated by the Borg. "Species 4401: Resistance is futile. You will comply." Three gold stars to anyone who can figure out why this squirrel belongs to "species 4401". Any guesses?

I see this often on the AH for 25g and upward (as high as 100+ even). Do not bother buying it at that price. It's a very common recipe and mats cost around 5g (4 copper bars, 2 malachite and 2 linen cloth). Simply ask an engineer to craft it for you with your mats to save money (but don't forget to tip).
Also, Breanni's "model 4401" comment is a reference to the item ID number for Mechanical Squirrel Box. ^^

This was my very first pet about 4 years ago now, its what got me hooked into pet collecting! I see them going for too much on the AH now, its simple to get the materials and have a low lvl engineer make one for you!

I've noticed that if you run along any fences with the mechanical squirrel, the little fella runs along the top of the fence walls. Has anyone else noticed this?

Its not mentioned in this description, but occasionally real squirrels will fall in love with it.

Something fun to do with this pet. Sit in a city near a squirrel that gets killed often (the floating sculpture in Dalaran, for example) and have this macro ready for the inevitable fuzzy death:

/s We can rebuild Squirrel. We have the technology. We can make him better, stronger, faster.

Notice how you need 2 Malachite (green gems) to make this squirrel, and that the squirrel has two green eyes.

I just found this pet for 5G in the AH. I was so excited and thought it was a fair price, as I usually see it for higher :)
