This appears to be nothing more than the paw of a small primate. A closer inspection shows that the hand has been dried by centuries of exposure to the sands of Uldum.

This companion is a rare tier Tol'vir archaeology item. It is created by discovering and "solving" 150 Tol'vir Archaeology Fragments. Players may utilize up to three Tol'vir Hieroglyphic to aid in the solving of this item. Each Tol'vir Hieroglyphic is the equivalent of 12 Tol'vir Archaeology Fragments.

Once completed, an entry on the Crawling Claw can be found in players' archaeology tab: "A legend among the tol'vir tells of a wicked djinn whom the Ramkahen sought to destroy. In an attempt to prevent his own death, the djinn tried to transfer his spirit into the body of a monkey. He was slain right in the middle of the transference, and only a fraction of his essence had moved over - only enough to possess the monkey's paw."

Although this pet is Bind on Account, the item will disappear once learned.

I finally found another person with the crawling claw pet and they do play rock, paper, scissors alright... but the losing pet explodes and is desummoned! :O

The lore of this pet is a reference to the short story "The Monkey's Paw" by William Wymark Jacobs, though it was likely also inspired by Thing from The Addams Family. It has a similar finger-walking animation too.

I am working on this one! One tip I have found, is - as nice as it is to keep working around the map until you have 3-4 in Uldum, don't do it. As soon as one spawns in Uldum, go get it, else it's just one less Uldum spot it can spawn in.

Still dancing around Kalimdor, trying to get this pet. It helps to be a Gnomish or Goblin Engineer and a Mage. Makes getting around much faster.

Upon 4.3 people have experienced archaeology nodes as it were giving 8,9and even 10 fragments at a time.
This not a bug :).
In 4.3 they have completely nerfed archaeology much to our hearts' content. This is going to hopefully make the crawling claw at least slightly easier to get.
Good luck this is probably one of the hardest pets in the game:)

If you want a pet that can beat Farmer Nishi quickly, then use this pet.  I can usually beat all three of her pets with just this one.  Easy pet daily.  Handier thing is to have one of your level 23s or 24s come in for a round and get a quick leveling.

 

Update: Seriously, great way to level a low pet.  Put my level 14 Darkmoon Rabbit in for one round and leveled him to level 18.

290 Tol'Vir solves at the moment. I have the ring, the sword, the pendant, and the mount...not a rare since 140 solves...keep on swimming keep on swimming...

This one was the most difficult archeology pet for me. When you have one dig zone in Uldum, make sure you go to dig it. Then you'll have the zone spot "clear" and it can be respawned again. Good luck!

I finally got this one on my 390th Tol'vir solve. Anyone toiling away getting common after common and not seeing results after even 100-200 solves, keep going, it has to come eventually.

Anyone have a theory on the drop rate? I've seen comments ranging from 11 to 300, most being in the 50-150 range. Does 1/100 seem reasonable?

If that were true, that's a huge grind considering the nature of archaeology.

I'm up to 91 tol'vir solves and giving up for the night, again. I hope it doesn't take more than 150 or I'll go crazy haha.

** Well, got it on my 97th solve. I have a feeling it's about 1/100 from what I've been seeing.

Dalaran's not as busy as it used to be, so it gets a little lonely in my shop these days. At least I can amuse myself by playing rock, paper, scissors with this pet! Not to mention the Crawling Claw is great if I'm in need of an extra helping "hand" managing the store's pets. Of course, he needs to stop with that "five-finger-discount" nonsense...
