This pet is a free gift for purchasing the Burning Crusade Collector's Edition. This edition is no longer sold in stores, however it had a sizable print run and can often be found on auction websites. While this is a rare pet, it's not quite as rare as the original Collector's Edition pets.

You can go to your battlenet account page and if you purchased the CE after you already have the game installed just put the new CE key code like you are adding another game.

It will update your games version and next time you log on you will have a new pet in your mailbox. You can alternatively call Blizzard and have them upgrade it directly. I know because I have done this.

It's a shame I didn't know about this when I bought the battle chest! Would it be possible to give myself the pet, and someone else the Burning Crusade upgrade? (I don't mind buying it again since my husband needs a copy, but I'd hate to buy myself another copy AND him one just to get the pet.)

As a diehard pet collector, I absolutely had to have a Netherwhelp. So that meant obtaining a copy of the Burning Crusade collector's edition. My preorder was questionable at best and not a single store in my area had a copy on the release date. So I paid a fortune on ebay, only to get my preorder after all. Now the aftermarket is saturated with BC collector's editions. I swear, if I ever find the Murphy who coined Murphy's Law, I'll Pyroblast him. Twice.
