This pet was formerly known as 'Tiny Black Whelpling'.

After Patch 4.0.3a this pet was added to multiple "dark" whelpling loot tables. Zones where this pet may be found off of the whelplingsinclude:

  • Wetlands (lvl 20 - 25 zone)
  • Dustwallow Marsh (lvl 35 - 40 zone)
  • Badlands (lvl 44 - 48 zone)
  • Burning Steppes (lvl 49 - 52 zone)

got this guy on my 106th kill. in wetlands there is a little strip of 7 whelps where they spawn very fast. by the time you are at the 4th in the strip the first is respawning. so it gots fast... now on to my next pet

I farmed for this in Wetlands, they respawn really quickly there and there are heaps of them. I killed over 300 of them and no drop.

In about 2 hours I killed 702 Ebon Whelps in the Wetlands. I was able to get the Tiny Crimson Whelping around kill 623-ish and at kill 702 I got the Dark Whelpling. Now I have something to sell and all 4 of these old dragons :)

Farmed several hundreds mobs in the Wetlands and no luck...
then today, when I was digging for archaeology (again, in Wetlands) randomly killed a few whelps and bingo! There he was :)

Got it after 10-15 kills of Ebon Whelp's in Wetlands.
Same targets can also drop the Tiny Crimson Whelp - but I havn't been lucky enough to find that while I was searching for the Dark Side of the family

I just got this guy of an ebon whelp after only 22 kills! YAY!! Spent 2 hours farming feralas for the emerald whelp...still looking for the crimson one

This pet is really cute and everything, but it would be AWSOME if Blizz would make a bronze whelpling! They have black, green, blue and red, but they need a bronze one! By the way, Badlands is probably the best place to farm for him. Good Luck!

This took me roughly 1513 kills in Badlands and around 4 hours to farm. Badlands is easily the best place to farm this.

Just got this one after 239 loots! Only took about an hour. Plus all the skins make farming worth it. Mainly killed Nyxondra's Broodlings in the Badlands since there are tons and they respawn fast.

I bought this little baby myself,atleast on my server there is usually plenty in AH :) The colours are similiar to the ones I´ll have in my tier 9 set :)) <3 This whelpling is one of my favorite pets.Its cute,like I think every pet in the whelpling "family" is.

I spent an obscene amount of time farming for the azure,emerald (with success), and crimson (no success so far) whelplings. But this one dropped off the 3rd Flamebrood Whelpling I killed while questing for the Tiny Flamefly! Either I just got a whole lot luckier, or they changed the drop rate!

Got this during a quest in Badlands which requires killing black whelplings. I didn't notice it at first because it uses the same icon as the quest items.

One of the quests in the tiny flamefly questline requires killing 5 broodlings. That's where my dark whelpling came from. Totally unexpected; in fact, I didn't notice him until clearing out my inventory after turning in the quest.

This pet is now a rare drop from the ~level 24 mob "Ebon Whelp", which can be found in the Wetlands!

It didn't take to long for me to grab this pet. Re-spawn is decent enough so u can loot slowly but surely. It took me 3 hours to get it. Not a difficult one in my opinion.

I have a habit of being driven a little insane while grinding for rare pets. As I was targeting the last scalding whelp in my route, I basically said out loud, "Why can't I just grab you and take you home with me right now?!" Sure enough I see the Dark Whelping icon pop up as I loot. Slightly perplexed, I thought to myself, "Uhh.. okay then, thanks buddy." :)

I have a friend who found a Dark Whelping months before the Burning Crusade hit. She kept it in her bank vault, intending to eventually give it to a blood elf warlock. But it was almost a year until the Blood Elves joined the horde. Alas, they are finally together and they make a gorgeous pair, each with their glowing green eyes and tormented souls. Then again, the whelp’s soul is only tormented because he spent eleven months confined in the Orgrimmar bank!
