I found three of these guys at Faststrider Retreat within three minutes.
Reading comments I see I got super lucky. Rare on the second spawn I encountered bottom of zone near the road. Not reall close to any camps or populated areas.
Took about 2 hours but, I got mine between Faribreeze Village and East Sanctum. All the other comments kept me encouraged that it was possible. Lol! Not the longest grind for a rare, but, long enough!
After battling over 300 of these..Finally got a rare at Ruins of Silvermoon

I just spent the last 3 hours trying to find a rare (still none), but I have a ton of pets I leveled 1-5. Maybe tomorrow will work out better.
Edit - leveled 3 more pets to 5 and finally got it.

Got a rare after about an hour of battling other saplings and rabbits in the area. Found mine south of the North Sanctum. If you're Alliance... Be careful. :D

1st one I came across was a rare! :-D
Well I had hoped, since his name is "ruby" sapling, that the model would have red leaves and white bark, but here's to future patches. =) Still a super cute pet.
I was very lucky to find my rare after only battling 4/5 of these saplings. Good luck guys!
finally! after about 3hrs finally got a rare on the hill just east of Farstrider Retreat. unless you're super lucky, expect to be here hunting them a while :(
Found a ton of them in Silvermoon City near Farstrider Retreat. Just hate that I can't fly in these areas.

Expect a few hours farming the rare version of this pet, its kind 1 in 150 chance!
I concur, this pet is extremely sustainable for prolonged outings. He's worth the trouble of getting a rare and leveling!
He has a shield AND heal...he's like a little wrath era resto druid; nearly impossible to kill without some big cd's. Also nice is the critter attack which makes it a lot easier to level him out in the wild.
For anyone wondering, these are all over Eversong Woods, except for the Dead Scar.
It took many attempts to get the rare, but it was there :) his spawn health was about 235, I noticed the oned I battled about 225-231hp were uncommon.
I have to say, after finding a rare of this fella.. I am very glad I kept leveling him. His self heal "Photosynthesis" is amazing for further pet hunting.
Find pet, battle till low, let Ruby sapling sit there healing its self while you spam trap. This fella has let me get a nice collection of rares thus far where otherwise I may have lost my team trying.
