Before patch 4.0.3, alliance characters could obtain this pet from the quest [48]Becoming a Parent.

Now the pet may only be farmed by both factions as a zone drop in Feralas.

ALLIANCE: Recover an orphaned egg from a nest, encase the egg with a protective substance, travel across the globe to ensure that the pet is in the best possible hands, collect food for the pet when it first hatches, and finally, welcome the pet into the world when it hatches and become it's mother.

HORDE: Kill an endless amount of Sprite Darters and rip the un-hatched egg from a dead mother's rotting corpse.

Well, motherhood isn't for everyone.

My favorite Pet of them all.
As a Night Elf she gives me Pride for she is one of our own and full of the Elven Magic. She reminds me of the splendor of our race and a Crowning Jewel to our Mother Elune. Her Wings glorify Elune in their Beauty. As a Druid I am happy to make sure her kind still thrive to astound us all in our walk with Nature. She never fails to bring a smile upon my face.

I felt just awful farming this. I mumbled an apology to myself after each kill. The 126th darter dropped mine. I'm envious of alliance: not only do you not have to slaughter the little fellas, but you actively work to free them!

This is the main reason my pet obsession became what it is. After doing the horribly boring chain to uptain this pet, she was the first "Wow! Where did you get that little cutie?" comment I got. That was it: I'd sold my soul to the pet community. As a warlock, that might be fitting though.

I only started playing a year ago. At first I just wandered around exploring and ended up in farals. I was such a new player that I didnt even know companion pets existed! and I was low level so mobs kept attacking me. I remember dying, a bunch. But I obviously killed the right one becuse, as I was vendoring I saw it. I SERIOUSLY almost vendored it. I had never seen somthing with the option to right click to do anything.  So thats what I did, and got my first and favorite pet.

After ten days, two dozen cups of coffee, thousands of kills and looting enough tiny fangs that I'm sure I'm pooping them out of my booty-cheeks, this pet finally dropped for me. This dragonlet is fabulous, in every way imaginable. Very striking; people do double-takes when you have this out in a city. If you're going to farm for this, I highly recommend farming the Noxious Whelplings in northern Feralas, around the lake. I got eight whelps to drop in the time it took me to grab a sprite.

Got him today after 1,3K noxious whelplings, while earning 3 tiny emerald whelplings, I was about to give up hope, took a small break and bang, on the first kill on my return.

OMG!! i finally got it about 5 min ago. i farmed the Noxious Whelp first for about 8000 kills and got a bunch of emerald whelps but no sprite darter so i looked on wowhead and they said kill Grimtotem Marauders b/c they were so many and fast respond time so off i went. it took me 17786 kills and it finaly dropped. i was so happy! this was the longest i ever farmed for a pet even longer than the Parrot Cage (Hyacinth Macaw) that took only 9k kills! It still drops just takes a long time. GOOD LUCK!

The Alliance quest chain for the Sprite Darter is a bit of a globe trot, so be prepared from some travel time. The plus side is that in addition to having one of the more colorful pets, the chain also gives you a nice chunk of Darnassus and Alliance rep.

For any Horde with auto-loot on trying to get this please bear in mind that, as it's common and BoP, you won't be alerted when you pick this up. I spent hours farming for it only to realise it was already in my bags and I just hadn't noticed (it's easy to miss along with all the other common items you'll end up picking up at the same time).

Got this back in the day when it was awarded in the end of a quest chain. The chain and the fact that you would get this adorable pet from it was not well known back then, and we were not so big on checking every little thing online yet either. It was a well kept secret by a few of us for a good while. I have never been so happy to recive a pet before.. "Congrats, Akeleie. You're a parent... kinda"

I wasn't even looking for this pet when I found it. I was levelling archeology and was killing to clear the zone I was surveying. I generally loot everything, then sell all the junk on my way to the next site. As I was going through my bags, selling my greys I found this pet. I was so excited, but feel bad for anyone that spent hours trying to get it. It makes a pretty great battle pet too.

I killed just over 4k before this cute bugger dropped off of the Grimtotems. I was on the phone at work when it happened almost screamed aloud.

Does this really still drop? Me, my husband, my son, and my brother have all taken turns farming this on my main, and so far we've been going for almost 24 hours straight and NO SPRITE!!! We're farming the sprites in Feralas and NOTHING. Its really annoying.

For everyone who did not get this pet pre-cata (including me>_<). Prepare for a challenge.

Chance- 1in10000.
Bind-on-pickup.

This is now the hardest pet to get in the game. Obviously you met get lucky and get it while leveling or farming for your Emerald Whelping. If you don't the best thing to do is farm the grimtotem marauders because they have a very fast respawn rate and are close together.
May the RNG be with you.

Been farming this for months... Around 7000 kills and no luck... All I can say if you're having a hard time farming this like me is to keep trying, eventually it will happen. :)

I'm a longtime fan of this site, and therefore want to make a contribution towards accurate information.

I have killed over 600 of these over 4 hours, and had no drop. I've quadruple checked that I'm in the right area, beating on the correct, poor mob. I've also put in the world's most embarrassing ticket, thinking it might be glitched. I don't know what the result of that will be.

At any rate, unless I'm a mega-outlier, the drop rate is definitely not 1 in 100.

Until recently, only us alliance folk were able to obtain this pet. I used to feel sorry for all you Hordies out there who didn't know the joy of owning your very own faerie dragon. I even suggested defecting to the alliance to get this little guy. In fact, I still do! Why? Because you'd be able to fight alongside adorable gnomes like me! Wait... why are you looking at me like that? *gulp* C'mon, put down that battle axe... *points* Hey, isn't that Thrall!? *blinks away*
