Spawn of Onyxia can be found near Onyxia's Lair. I found mine at 48,75. It was a common. Flew in and just started killing off battle pets in the area and after about 10 minutes one spawned. Also got my Littlest Pet Shop Achievement on this guy :)
I just want to confirm that you can force these to spawn by killing the critters and battle pets directly around Onyxia's Lair. You do not have to battle the battle pets to kill them either. I've made three spawn in 20 minutes doing this.
Edit: Make that 4. But it may have been a coincidence since I can't seem to get it to work anymore.
Edit 2: Okay got 3 more to spawn. This definitely works. However I still think they're on some kind of timer so you can only force so many at a time.
Spent about an hour flying around waiting for one to spawn after having to white flag a fight with a green. Twenty mins after I started caught a poor - instead of the rare toad that was teamed with it. Flew around some more to try for another catch and killed whelpings while I waited. Got a rare Dark Whelping at 54.66 72.77 while waiting. Also picked up a rare black rat in the process of battlle leveing while waiting.

If you're having issues finding one, try this: talk to Zidormi, who's just before the bridge to Theramore. Return to the pre-destruction phase and the pets should start showing up.
Found an uncommon near the cave entrance. It was the only one I had seen since capturing a poor a few months ago. Oddly, there were lots of other players around...I guess none were looking for the spawn. Yesterday around 2pm ST. Not even sure if I want to level this guy up since the moves are exactly the same as the Onyxian Whelpling 5th Anniversary pet - already leveled that one to 25.
killed all the battle pets around like suggested and had 2 spawn. first was uncommon...screwed up and killed it...second was rare...didnt make the same mistake twice.
Got mine, wasnt farming it, I was actually farming whelps for the dark whelping. I didnt even think to look for the spawn, I saw it fluttering as I was doing pet battles between spawn times for the whelps. caught it and im super excited about it!
Camped for about an hour a week or so ago, finally found one (had to beat other campers to her), was poor quality. Happy with that, and unwilling to wait another hour, etc., I went on my way. Then, flying by this morning, I happened to notice there were quite a few of them around. Snagged myself a rare!!
Pet hits pretty hard and heals herself during the fight, but all in all the fight is managable. Found them around about 6am on Whisperwind.
I got lucky, flew there expecting to have to camp, found it immediately, captured him, that thing is pretty strong.
Be sure to fly all AROUND the cave where these little guys spawn. Not a lot of folks are aware that they show up on the sides, as well as behind the cave. I found mine along the side and managed to snag him. :D
Found one right out in the middle of the marsh. Was the only one in the area.
Ysera at 12:56 am, Sunday morning. He spawned on the right side of the hill where the entrance to Onyxia's cave is. Immediately after another spawned in front. Took about 40 minutes to find the 1st one with about 6 other ppl roaming around the area
Perhaps I just got really lucky. I had not seen any of these in months, and then today they were everywhere. The first 4 I battled were uncommon, and the seventh one was a rare (P/P)! Must have been my lucky day (also got my Minfernal today, first was I've seen and it was uncommon).
I decided after i had upgraded my poor to uncommon quality that i had wanted a rare so i decided to go back and start farming again and about 10 min into killing random spawns around the area waiting for one to spawn one of the rare rune stones popped up and i was sooo happy i could finnaly upgrade my onyxian whelping and i wouldnt have to sit there and wait 3 hrs for a rare to spawn.
At about 750 am EDT [550 Zangarmarsh time] got a rare! This was my second trip here to try to get one. Last trip I got a green after hours of killing/pet battling everything around the instance and the cave behind it with the help of my sister, who also got a Spawn. This trip I spent 2 hours, one round of killing dragonkin and the rest of the time pet battling. Don't give up! Pet battling your way around works! Thanks, posters! Found at 51.9 70.9
Got my Spawn of Onyxia right in front of the entrance to Onyxia's Lair at 2pm server time on Kil'jaeden. No competition. Rare, first time. Don't know if it was luck or what, but I'm glad to have the lil guy.
I guess it has calmed down since MoP came out. I was just passing by yesterday and they were all over with no competition for them at all.
Found 2 on my server early in the morning, when MoP first came they were heavy camped now its not too bad. First was uncomming (snagged it) and second was poor
I did what this forum recommended, and at about 3:20am central (2:20am ST) I got an uncommon spawn. Since I had done some move swapping, I accidentally killed the uncommon one. About ten minutes of critter killing, battle critters and normal critters, I found another one (that was rare) and caught it.
