This pet was formerly known as 'Tiny Black Whelpling'.
After Patch 4.0.3a this pet was added to multiple "dark" whelpling loot tables. Zones where this pet may be found off of the whelplingsinclude:
- Wetlands (lvl 20 - 25 zone)
- Dustwallow Marsh (lvl 35 - 40 zone)
- Badlands (lvl 44 - 48 zone)
- Burning Steppes (lvl 49 - 52 zone)

I have a friend who found a Dark Whelping months before the Burning Crusade hit. She kept it in her bank vault, intending to eventually give it to a blood elf warlock. But it was almost a year until the Blood Elves joined the horde. Alas, they are finally together and they make a gorgeous pair, each with their glowing green eyes and tormented souls. Then again, the whelp’s soul is only tormented because he spent eleven months confined in the Orgrimmar bank!

After trying more than 9 hours and killing more than 1500 mobs I decided to quit, my boyfriend tryed a little more without any result. I started trying again next morning and, without any expectations, Ive dropped it after less than 100 kills =). It was really surprising lol
My conclusion is that It doesnt matter how many whelplings you kill, its only luck!
So good luck you all ^^
The problem Dustwallow Marsh is that they are so spread apart that it makes them very cumbersome to find.
In Burning Steppes farming Flamescale Broodlings and I am at 1400 kills so far and no drop. The information on this site doesn't seem accurate. :/ I am wondering if I should switch to a place with a better drop rate like Dustwallow or to Wetlands so I have a chance to get the crimson whelping as well.
Update: Over 1500, no drop, switching to Wetlands.
Update: Stopped in Badlands instead and got it in 400 kills! And quickly, too since they are bunched together for multiple kills unlike BS.then today, when I was digging for archaeology (again, in Wetlands) randomly killed a few whelps and bingo! There he was :)
Now to farm for the last two. Blah, frost resistant mobs...
Farmed this guy in Dustwallow Marsh killing Searing Whelps. Got one after about 50min... Decided to continue trying for a second one and got it after another 20min farming. Good luck!
Ebon Whelp in Wetlands drop this and
Tiny Crimson Whelpling got my
Dark Whelpling after only 230 kills (about 30 min) Ebon Whelp is compact and spawn really fast.
Enjoy.thought i would go and farm it for a bit in the badlands, from the comments i read here prepared myself for a good 1-2 hour grind at least. 3rd kill got it haha. and normally my luck sucks, happy with that.
So...another website said that it was a .18% chance of getting it from Nyxondra's Brood in Bad Lands. I figured that was about 1 in 555. I got myself ready for a long night (or multipule nights of farming) and I got it on my 18th kill...guess 18 is my lucky number for now.
I found this little beauty in AH for only 800g. It really felt like stealing but glad to have one :D Happy collecting, hunting, and buying ! :D
Love this guy as part of my team to beat Aki. Clouded Hedgehog, Dark Whelping and Efferescent Glowfly completed my team today.
I finally got mine after about 2 hours of killing Ebon Whelplings in the Wetlands, it is the best enemy to kill if you want both crimson and dark whelpling.
