Prior to The Shattering, this whelpling dropped from the Red Whelp, Flamesnorting Whelp, and Crimson Whelp. These creatures have since been removed.

As of Patch 4.0.3, the Tiny Crimson Whelpling is now a zone drop from the Wetlands.

Be careful farming for this little guy; mixed among the Crimson, Flamesnorting, and Red Whelps are Lost Whelps. They are shadow-immune whelps with no chance to drop the pet, and as far as I've seen, they don't share spawn locations with the other three.

The farm path is large, but it's not too tedious for anyone of decent level to handle them. Stop by the cave to the east for the Razormaw Matriarch spawn as well!

This site is what prompted my Whelp collecting. I saw the "Got Whelp?" shirt, and thought, "Oh noes, I got no whelps." So I went to farm this red one, which I got pretty quickly the first night. So I thought, I better do a hard one next to not get too complacent. So I went to the Emerald prepared for a long grind (didn't drop from adolecents then). Got it the next night. The Dark took 2 days, but then I got the Azure the same night I got the Dark one. So 4 days: 4 whelps! Got Whelp? Yeppers!

Finally! Somewhere along the lines of 35k+ mobs killed for this pet. Can't give an entirely accurate count because I didn't get an addon until I'd been at it for a good 10 hours. I averaged 1k mobs/hour farming on the road where the dragonkin and orcs fight each other. First day I tried after aoe looting dropped I got him in 45 minutes. With aoe looting my average was about 1800 mobs/hour. If you're someone who is very unlucky like me, silently thank bliz for aoe looting and get back to it!

I found the perfect spot to farm for this guy, and I had mine within an hour of finding the spot. Follow these directions and you will have a red whelp of your own;

Go to the wetlands. If you go over to the area that leads to the giant gates which leads to Grim Batol, you will see several broken down wagons. There is 3 groups of battles, 1-2 dragonkin and 2-3 dragonmaw orcs fighting. If you kill the mobs who are fighting, they will respawn within seconds of their death, giving you tons to loot!

I can confirm that the Level 24 Ebon Whelps do drop the tiny Crimson Whelpling. After many days of killing them and having 16 Dark Whelplings drop, I finally got this guy. There are two rows of 7 Ebon Whelps in the Wetlands that have a very quick respawn rate with a lot of others spread around that have slower timers. So killing the Ebon Whelps was almost continuous. It was still a very long grind. Good luck (and congrats) to those who get this in far less kills. Its worth it.

Whelplings are toughies when it comes to farming, and when you begin to attempt this grueling task, having a very large supply of snacks nearby may help a little. Trust me, farming for these lil' guys is definately worth it. Dragon whelps are so cute!

P.S. I highly suggest farming these cuties before Cataclysm strikes...they might go extinct!

Currently leveling this little guy right now... totally worth the 8k gold I spent on it. The self-heal is magnificent and this pet deals a fairly nice amount of damage.

I FINALLY got this today. I have farmed for this whelp for months. 1 out of 10000 is about right.. Keep at it! Make sure to farm on a skinner. I made great $ by selling drops and skins. And if your guild doesn't have the skinning achievement 'Skinnin for a livin' this is great grinding for that.

I've been trying to get this pet for months. I decided to leave it and get some loremaster achieves done instead. Grinding quests in Wetlands, lo and behold...the pet drops from the first Dark Iron mob I kill.

Finally got this little fella today after weeks of farming for an hour or so at a time. Logged on in the Wetlands and he dropped from a Whelpstealer in less than 15 kills! I'll feel sad not to be evening out the playing field between the Dragonkin and the Whelpstealers though. Poor Dragonkin are outnumbered 2 to 1!

After several days of heavy duty farming in Wetlands, and after an OBSCENE amount of gold made on the AH (selling cloth and leather), I FINALLY got this little guy. And now, my collection of dropped whelplings is complete. :)

I couldn't tell you how many mobs I killed, but there is a spot where the dragonkins and orcs are battling it out and respawning constantly. Best place to sit and AOE. Boring but efficient.

I am at (with a cululative 25 hours of farming ONLY killing the Ebon Whelps, approximately 7.5k slaughtered) 1 Crimson and 3 Dark whelplings, and I refuse to stop until I have another Crimson!
This little guy is MAD elusive, but I HAVE seen him drop since patch 4.1, not so far since 4.2....
Good luck to all, and remember, dual purpose farming the Ebon Whelps, gives you little Black Dragonflight spawn to hold for ransom in the AH while you work towards this gorgeous little guy!! ^_^

Dragging herself to the gates of Hammerfall, she fought her way to the Inn and collapsed in bed. Smiling from ear to ear, despite the battered armour and staff, she turned to her side to see a tiny crimson whelping curled up beside her; wings curled and fast asleep. After everything, it had definitely been worth it.
I found that laps around the border of the spawn area worked best, with maybe only 1-2 Lost Whelps in your path. I almost gave up but the 3617th Whelp gave me the pet. :) GL!

You must be patient with this one. Unlike the other Whelps, these seem the hardest to find. As you may notice, the mobs that drop 'em are the lowest leveled. As Alliance, this will be easier to get, but as Horde, the best route to get to them is to fly to Arathi and run down to the Wetlands.

Overall, they are the most annoying (as Horde) to farm because of the low worth on the leathers and hides. For me, it took me about 5 days to farm, so don't get discouraged and good luck!

Well, it took more than 20,000 kills between my husband and I, but finally one dropped! I was beginning to get discouraged because it was taking so long, but that constant spawn point is great.  Now on to the Dark Whelping!

Finally had one drop for me after thousands of kills, SO HAPPY. I highly recommend getting the spot around 67,47 (I think thats it, where the orcs and dragonkin are fighting).  The spawn rate is brilliant there, aoe them down and auto loot. There are two small groups on either side of them, I found that if I ran up and quickly got those, the pack in the middle spawned faster and with more of them in one hit. I got into a cycle of left pack, middle, right pack, middle, etc. Good luck!

Early on in my collecting career, I farmed for this pet for three days straight. Upon summoning it for the first time, I immediately noticed a problem: whelps fly right in my gnomish field of vision! But I wasn't about to farm for it again. So eventually my troll hunter got her own crimson whelp at auction — it only cost 120 gold... and my peace of mind!
