This pet is obtained via fishing in the Dalaran Underbelly (sewers). Like other capital cities in Azeroth, a fishing skill of 1+ is all that's required to fish in Dalaran. See El's Extreme Anglin' guide Dalaran Fishing - Giant Sewer Rat for more information.

Unlike Whiskers, the Giant Sewer Rat does NOT flip over and play dead. Also, it's pathing appears to be smaller (probably due to the larger size). However, a Giant Sewer Rat chasing after a druid in kitty form will often stop people in their tracks in Dalaran.

For those of you that are just as unlucky as I am, don't give up! I've been farming for this pet off and on for 2 years with no luck. Finally started the true grind yesterday, and after 9 hours, 2066 casts he was mine!

I have been fishing for this pet since wotlk was released. A depressing amount of casts later and now into cataclysm, I do not believe it exists.

This is most definitely my favorite pet of all time. I fished him up the day I turned level 80 back in 2009, and he's been my best buddy ever since! He's been our guild mascot for a while now, too! And when he gets those pet biscuits, he gets about as big as my blood elf! I am super excited that he'll soon be shared with my alts, and I know he will pwn in the upcoming pet battles!

I decided I'd try for this pet while in Dalaran to get the daily fishing quest. Got it in under 200 cast. :D Felt super lucky, now I just wish trying to get the small Whelps was that easy. Happy hunting to everyone.

I started to farm for this pet after spending time farming for the turtle mount. Since I was around Dalaran, I thought I'd try my luck. I guess Blizz took pity on me for grinding pets/mounts with absurdly low drop rates, and I managed to get the rat to drop in 30 casts!
Using the addon Rarity; (from Curse) it calculated:
7 Magic eaters
1 partially eaten fish
13 sewer carp
3 drowned rats
5 crystal vials
1 giant rat
To those who haven't gotten one yet, keep farming! + side, you stay in 1 spot! :)

After 15 minutes of fishing for this guy, I tried targeting the underbelly rat that was running around the end of the dock. Only took another 5 min before I heard the whooshing, clanking sound of the achievement. Coincidence, or good advice from fellow collectors? I don't know, but I immediately splashed him with a Pet Grooming Kit, to get the icky sewer stuff off of course, and wow... he musta been really filthy, cuz there's a huge hazy cloud surrounding him now! My little Pigpen, hehee.

Considering I have owned several pet rats in real life and adore them, this was a must have pet for me. It is adorable and almost as high as I am when it stands, as I am a gnome :P But for anybody worried about the 1 in 1000 drop rate, fear no more! I got mine at around 800 drops. Not nearly as bad, hehe. Good luck to fellow rat lovers and pet collectors!

Make sure your fishing level is as high as possible when farming this guy. That means +fishing hats, poles, lores, etc. The higher your probability for fishing up junk (grays), the lower your probability of fishing up our little friend here!

I make a strategy. 10 casts per day, 1% of chance. Got lucky in day seven. Dont know if works for everyone, but this way i didnt get crazy. Nice guy, by the way. (sry about the english, trying to learn)

Don't make the mistake I made and buy it on the auction house. That's great for beefing up yout unique pet collection, but you do not get the "I Smell a Rat" Achievment.

Back during Wrath I fished for this little guy for hours and hours with no luck. Eventually I gave up, but I swore I'd always come back for him. Surprisingly enough, he just dropped from a [Misty Satchel of Exotic Mysteries]!

Fished various spots and finally settled on the NE alley next to the wooden building. After 428 casts, the sewer rat was mine! Fishing skill around 500.

396 casts..pet # 147 :) took a break from the sewers and got my mine sweeper achieve in Stormpeaks and then the coin achieve in Dal fountain. Gotta love downtime before xpacs!
