Prior to The Shattering, the Hyacinth Macaw dropped from Bloodsail Mage, Bloodsail Swashbuckler, Bloodsail Warlock, Bloodsail Sea Dog, and Bloodsail Deckhand in Stranglethorn Vale.
After Patch 4.0.3a this pet became a zone drop in Northern Stranglethorn and The Cape of Stranglethorn.

The Hyacinth Macaw arguably has the lowest drop rate of any dropped pet. So farming for this parrot is a tough grind. You might try farming your auction house instead. Often non-collectors will put this up for a few gold or less, not realizing its true value. A friend of mine managed to nab hers for just two gold! Then again, the odds were in her favor since she spends 80% of her time at the auction house searching for armor that doesn't make her look "fat".
I just now looted this from a Bloodscalp at the Ruins of Zul'Kunda (Northern Stranglethorn) while I was farming for a Razzashi Hatchling. Guess I got lucky on the Hyacinth because I got it at 83 kills. Still farming for the Razzashi though ... sigh.
This pet is still one of the most unique looking pets in the game, as far as colouring. I purchased it for 6500g during WOLK even though it was (at the time) the rarest pet in the game. I was disappointed when pet battles where introduced and it was reduced to rare quality, but if epic pet stones are introduced, this one will be my first upgrade lol.
Ok am torn I feel bad but bought it anyway on Sen'Jin I got this one for 10GP yes that is 10 not 10000.00. Guess was my lucky day and someone else mistyped.
I was in Stranglethorn and decided to go check Jaguero Isle to see if it was raining to catch mysel a cute little ape! It was raining but sadly there were no pets about. After flying around for a minute, I decided to try a rumour I had heard that if you kill the monkeys on the Isle, baby ones spawn. So I killed one, and to my amazing this amazing pet dropped! AND a Baby Ape spawned! Lucky day for me! :)

Completely fluked getting this, whilst doing the lead up quests to get my lashtail hatchling. Happy days for me considering what they go for at auction. :)
Word of note about this pet- learning it will reduce it's quality from epic to rare. If you try to re-cage, the quality will still be rare.
Finally got it on the ah, had to grind all night to get the gold.. Have to say though.. this was the one i had been waiting for. I love my Macaw!!!
Took me about 9 hours of farming to get this one. It dropped from the pirates on the three ships south of booty bay. Even got a razzashi hatchling along the way
I FINALLY got one of these gorgeous lil guys last night for 8k on the AH! I was so in shock to see it for so cheap as I've been watching the AH onoff for years and never been within reach of affording it!
i got ths guy not even looking for him i was grinding for pearls and in 15 mins not that many kills this little guy dropped, i told my hubby and it was like dollar signs appeared LMAO he's been grinding forever to find one and nothing
I was out in stranglethorn on a quest, so i started killin trolls, and the third one i found had it!!!!! Then i sold it for a Proto Drake Whelp. Probably should have kept the Macaw. Oh well, Draky is my third fave pet, Whelpy, my Dark Whelpling, is my second, and Flamy, my Phoenix Hatchling, is my first fave!!!
There are now several places where the pirates are bugged so that witha high level you can easily farm them so quickly, that they hardly hit the ground before they respawn. This fast respawn rate actually let me farm 5k kills in two days. It was well worth it when both she and the Razzashi finally dropped!
I spent almost the entire time killing Braddock and the Skullsplitter trolls in the southern part of STV. I think it's a really good place to farm, the drop rates are decent (Braddock 0.06% and the skullsplitters around 0.05%) and you can get a really good route going around where Braddock is that helps keep the pace.
In the 3 years I've been playing, I've never seen it drop for anyone before. I'm unsure of the drop rate, but it does look like it's STV-zoned. Good luck to you fellow collectors!
I was playing a new alt on Illidan this afternoon and had just started one of the quests given in Hardwrench Hideway and behold! Guess what dropped on my second kill? I could not believe it!
The bad news is that unless I paid $25 to transfer this character to my main realm, there was no way for me to get my hands on it.
I just sold it on Illidan for 13,020g so I guess I can't complain :(
