The barbaric centaur over-hunted giraffes for decades, but it was the tauren who saved this species from extinction.
This is for people who have locations or TomTom, I found 5 sets of spawns starting at 44, 80 and walking to 44, 74 before turning around and repeating the walk.
Second set starts at 50, 77 and swings around to 47, 71 and swings back around.
Third set starts at 46, 77 and walks to 47, 60 and swings back around.
Fourth set starts at 47, 84 and swings around to 50, 80 and walks back.
Fifth set starts at 45, 88 and walks to 46, 76 and walks back.
There might be one or two more spawn points in the zone because I found the pet but no adults (50, 52), (44, 87) and (45, 60) but the adults wasn't up and walking around that I could find.
I tried what another post said to do and only grab the pet and leave the Barrens Giraffe adults up and wait for the pet to spawn again, I waited over a hour and 20 minutes and nothing re-spawn.
I was sound asleep last night when my dreaming was interrupted by a voice in my head that basically said, "If you want the giraffe, get up and go now."
So, I did.
At 4 a.m. CST
I didn't see any babies...but I saw a childless pair of Barrens...so I shot them (RIP). 2 minutes later, a couple spawned with a baby in tow. I FINALLY got my "little" guy (who is twice as tall as I am, 'cuz I'm a gnome). I don't care that he's "poor" quality, because to me...he's simply priceless!
There is a currently a bug with the Giraffe Calf and the flight taxi.
When you fly from Crossroads to Desolation Hold (using a flight master) you will see 5-10 of these. But when you quickly fly back to where you saw them, you will only find Prarie Dogs. I tested this multiple times and even used a few friends. I am guessing there is an issue with the phasing between the two zones. Sure made me think I was going crazy at first!

Level 85 Alliance character, no quest. I have seen him 5 times since I started looking yesterday (maybe 3 hrs total? Trying to get in in the "rare" blue version, the "uncommon" green is the best I've gotten).Four times he's been between Fort Triumph and Baal Moden w/2 or 3 adults. The 5th time I found *2* of them together, no adults, up by Forward Command, near that little double hill to the west across the road. Hope that helps!
Yay! Got mine this morning on the southern tip of the battlescar between Desolation and Triumph.
Yes there is, it's called battlepets-quality, from curse. A must have.
Today I found about SIX of these right after the server restart. 5 out of the 6 were Common, and one a Poor. I was so disappointed! I've been trying to track these guys all week.
After finding one and failing to catch it, I found a sort of system that worked well for me. Choose one area in which a few mobs spawn into. I chose the area just east of the road into Mulgore. Kill all the mobs which are not Giraffes, doing this will give a chance for more Giraffes to spawn.
Also, kill all the battle pets in the area and outside of the area. Keep in just the vicinity of your choosen spot and eventually a Giraffe Calf will spawn with one of the Giraffe mobs. Good luck!
These are going to be my White Whale it seems, had an uncommon one but my turrets killed it after my trap missed. I also spent 3 hours killing the same herd of gazelles (every 7 minutes) and they were nothing but gazelles from noon to 3pm server. So if they are indeed tied to giraffes they even have very very low spawn rate or something more to it. Wish blizzard would make the Giraffe Calf one of the adds you get when battling others in Southern Barren.
I was super excited when I saw they added giraffes as a battle pet! Took me about 5 hours total to find one, but eventually found it with a herd of giraffes. I made a /tar giraffe calf macro so I could find one easier as I flew around.
The thing I like most about them is the size, it's so tall! If you give one a biscuit it's taller than my tauren. So cool! =)
stinkin hard to find! i seen it when i was on a flight path and been looking for another for over an hour. :|
Ive collected almost every pet so now changing them into rares. I got a rare on the first one. Result :)
Flying back from Darkmoon Faire and flew over one by accident! Poor but after all the time I've spent hunting this one...I am happy!
Just found mine running with a pack of the big giraffes in the open area near Frazzlecraz Motherlode. I was autoflying along, just steering, and spamming a target macro with my eyes sort of glazed over, when I noticed as I flew that I had been targeting something that just dropped off. I sat up and flew back and found my Giraffe Calf. Poor quality, but I don't care. I don't see the point in collecting rares if you don't plan on battling with them.
I'm so happy! I found a rare at 44.8 60.3 in Southern Barrens!!! It was about 9 in the morning so I guess most night gaming no-lifers were sleeping at that time, making this an easy ctach. =)
After reading some comments here, I kinda feel like a right idiot...Why... you may ask !.. well like all of you hunting down this pet, I had just finished collecting what i needed from NBs and moved on to South.. Flew straight in and first pet i came across was a Giraffe Calf, went straight into battle.. his second was a rare i also needed.. so killed off giraffe and took the rare... At this time having NO idea how hard it was to actually get hold of one of these.. need to thk first b4 acting i reckon :)
Just after server reset found 3 giraffe calves in the fields of blood. Southern Barrens 45:43, 50:51. One a rare!
Mom flew around for a couple hours after getting hers, and found a poor for me, back when abandoning was not a safe thing to do. This is the first pet I stoned, and haven't regretted it yet, farming this sucker is quite the task.
Note: even though Barrens Giraffe, the mob these pets spawn with, are in Northern Barrens too, they do not spawn with them. Southern only =(
