I was flying in to do an AQ40 run and saw one of these guys in front to the entrance.  Clicked on him too start the battle and lo and behold he was a rare.  Pretty easy capture :)

 

And yes, both sidewinders I've battled so far fought alone.  They must think they're just too tough for backup...

got mine after running hubby thro aq40, it was at the base of the steps, uncommon :)

Got my Rare in Ahn'Qiraj: The Fallen Kingdom. He was by himself.

Found in the Ruins of Ahn'Qiraj. Strangely enough he was by himself when I founght him. No extra pets.
