The best place to farm these little guys is right next to Gorespine.  There are usually 6-8 that spawn around him, and they respawn within 5-10 minutes.  This is where I found my rare.

As of 5.1.0 these pets can now be captured as a rare quality

Also these pets can only be found as the primary pet only, they do not show up as a secondary pet in battle.

Just found my rare on the Townlong Steppes side of The Widening Deep...directly south of Rensai's Outpost.  So glad to be done with this search.

Found one in Townlong Steppes at 52.3,93.6. Almost at the border of Dread Wastes. It was an uncommon. It was the primary pet with 2 moths attached.

caught a rare after i got the rare whelk from a hedgehog battle, this guy was a little farther down, by a tree, with kitties around it. got lucky, first capture and rare, in the dread wastes.

I can confirm the 'rare' version being in game, caught one tonight.  Good luck to all the other rare pet hunter's out there.
