This is one of several raptor companions introduced in patch 3.2. Upon its initial release, this pet dropped from Takk the Leaper, a rare spawn found in the northeastern Barrens roughly every 4-6 hours.

As of patch 3.3, the Leaping Hatchling became a lootable item from Takk's Nest.

This pet will occasionally leap to its owner's feet.

This little beauty is definitely one of the more lively pets, and also has some separation issues... Stairs? Who needs them? Stairs happen to other pets. No, he'll just leap straight off the balcony and be right at your feet before you can so much as blink.

I suppose the heart attack you just got from seeing your little baby dive off a ledge is what you get for being a bad example and showing him that it's okay to cut corners by jumping off of high objects, you bad parent you.

3.3 Patch notes

Hatchlings: Leaping, Darting, Razormaw, and Ravasaur Hatchlings no longer drop from their associated rare creatures. Instead, there are now rare nests that spawn which contain these hatchlings. For example, the Leaping Hatchling can now be found in Takk’s Nest rather than as a drop from Takk the Leaper.

Definately one of my favourite hatchlings due to its "leap" animation which often see's it whistling past your ear when running from place to place. (If you forget you've got him out this can take you by surprise... I have often been seen rushing around Dalaran screaming "get it out of my hair!")

There's a bunch of coords where the nest spawns:
58.5, 8.3
59.5, 8.5 (<- I found it on this one)
60.3, 10.1
60.7, 13.3

The spawn times is not related to Takk nor Takk's death and it must take more than 2 hours to spawn (I tried timing it, but rl didn't allow me to be consistent).

I tried camping 60.3, 10.1 because most people report having found it there, just take a stroll around the area every now and then to make sure you're not camping the wrong tree.

best of luck!

I swear the rare raptors come back faster if you kill the mobs in the spawn area. I've had particularly good luck with Takk and Dart. Plus it gives you something to do while you wait, especially if you're a skinner.

Was able to find this fellow the day the patch dropped on my Alliance alt. (My pet collector, of course.) Takk has been hard to find on my server since unless you count corpses. The thing about this one that amuses me most is his little shriek noise he makes just as he realizes he needs to leap back to 'mommy' (or daddy!)

By far the easiest of the Raptors to get.

For those searching for this pet, I've read, and have now experienced, that the nests spawn independently of the named mobs. They're on different timers, and the named do not trigger the nests, nor vice-versa. Don't bother searching for the named, just look at the locations shown on wowhead for the nests, and check back periodically.

Good hunting!

Just got mine today at 64.1 / 23.1!  I figured out where all of the coordinates were that everyone posted and circled the trees looking for it.  I found it in 5 minutes thanks to everyone's help.

I just found this one today. I installed TomTom and found out i had been looking at the wrong trees! I did a couple rounds and did some mining...  all of a sudden there was the nest! 62.8, 20.2 - Good luck to all... it was fun looking for this one!

I searched the following trees that are mentioned in previous comments:

58.2, 22

61, 19.8

62.8, 20.2

64.2, 23

65, 28

After deciding to seriously look for these raptor pets, I installed the TomTom add on via Curse and it has made all the difference as I'm really bad with directions. Used this TomTom macro based on the comments here and searched under the trees:

/way 58 22

/way 60.92 19.86

/way 62.52 20.22

Found Takk's nest after my fourth look (my mage camped this area for a day).

Just got another hatchling for hubby so two today! Found this one at: 64.09 23.01

Found at 58, 22 at the base of a big tree, just south of that dark pool on the map (The Sludge Fen). Was flying around the area for a half hour or so in queue for a random when I found it ... had killed Takk about 15 minutes earlier, but in a totally different spot. My queue popped a couple minutes later too, so lucked out on timing!

This is my absolute favorite pet, and I'm glad to say that I own him. My boyfriend actually ended up finding the nest and getting the pet for me because we were looking for it. The tree was a little bit hard to find, but once you're in the area, it's sort of on top of a climbable mountain, if that helps anyone. That's what was stopping me from actually finding him until I was told that I had to climb a bit to find the nest beside the tree.

Hunting Log, Day 37: My Raptor Hatchling Expedition in The Barrens has ended! I just managed to get my Leaping Hatchling! Boy, this little fella can jump! He's always leaping— *ducks to avoid flying hatchling* Whoa... That was close! Surprisingly, I didn't even have to kill Takk. He just sorta turned his back on the little guy and ran off... it was almost intention— *dodges to avoid flying hatchling* Dang it! This fella never stops! He's too much of a burden for me... Takk! Come back!!! You forgot Takk Jr!
