This pet was formerly known as 'Maine Coon'. Prior to The Shattering, this pet could only be looted by horde as they dropped from the Dalaran Spellscribe, a rare mob that was friendly to alliance. Horde also had a chance of obtaining it from a Dalaran Shield Guard, Dalaran Theurgist, and Dalaran Summoner in the Alterac Mountains. These mobs have since been removed.

After Patch 4.0.3, the Black Tabby was relocated to Hillsbrad Foothills as a zone drop, making it more accessible for alliance.

If Stinker the skunk is nearby, he will fall in love with the Black Tabby and chase it around.

The Black Tabby and the Bombay are the two cats that Stinker will chase. When in close proximity, Stinker gets hearts over his head and will chase the cat quite far. Eventually the cat spurns his love and his heart breaks and both cat and skunk return to their owners. However Stinker's memory is short-lived, and he soon tries again... let us make beautiful music together.

I just got one off of the Stormpike soldiers on Corahann's Dagger. It's definitely a zone drop, just luck of the draw now I guess. I was farming wool for my lowbie tailor because I don't want to pay 30g a stack, so kill two birds with one stone, undercut some outrageous wool sellers and farm up a cute kitty.

I love this one, with its lil' stinker interaction.

For those who are trying, or want to farm this, I recommend npcscan. Just go into the interface and input a custom npc. Dalaran Spellscribe's ID is 1920. Good luck.

Edit: As of Patch 4.0.3a, The Spellscribe is no more. I hope my input helped for those trying to get it before the patch. Apparently the tabby is now a zone drop in Hillsbrad Foothills as relayed from Wowhead info.

The rare Dalaran Spellscribe is the best mob to farm for this pet. It's respawn is quick, about 6 or 7 hours, and you can run through the village where it spawns spamming a targetting macro to quickly see if it's there. It's not generally camped, so if you leave a char logged out in the area you can get several kills a day with minimal time invested.

Hooray! I ventured to Hillsbrad to find this shy kitty, and after killing 4.5k of the insta-respawn horses near the yeti cave, I got my tabby! I decided to try for another one, and lo and behold the newt time I aoe looted the corpses, another kitty showed up! My lack of luck recently seems to have repaid me with great luck for this little guy.

Never give up! Your kitty might just be on your next loot!

So far a pain for me to farm. Have killed all kind of mob. I'm at 13 214 kill and counting. Rarity say the likelihood are now at 92.89% :(
I notice Warcraft Pets updated this pet from droprate 1-1000 to 1-8000 :/

I talk to GM who say... "The kitty is indeed very rare and hard to get. But still obtainable"

Well, AH? Nope, more fun to get i by my self ;)

1 thing i know for sure, never to give up, next kill i am sure i get it ;

FINALY, after 14 hour, 14 201 kill it drop (Rarity 94.16%) :))

Finally found this cute little kitty after several hours of farming. Farmed Murlocs for 2 hours with no luck, then decided to farm the wild horses between Tarren Mill and Durnholde Keep down at the river. Dropped from the 3rd Wild Horse I killed.

Got him! Farming for about 15 minutes when the server shutdown started 15 minute countdown. Was going to stop and thought ...just a couple more, and then there it was. Wild horse near the river.

Oh my lord is all I can say about this grind..My rarity addon said 15:42 hours and 9987 mobs killed with percentage 84% however before I got that addon I already had 3500 on killtrack.

Anyway my main mobs were murlocs and gnolls and I would swing around to look for the 8 horse pack. On way back to the gnolls  I said to there is a lonely horse grazing, swoop down and killed And BANG thing popped up:  found cat carrier.  I immediately learned and upgraded to rare...god he deserves it

If you intend to use wild horses for this, be aware that as of patch 5.1 the spawnrate for the horses is 5+ min between respawns.

The average that I noted was around the 7 minute mark.  Early days so others might get a more accurate timing, but in any case it is no longer instant respawn as it has been in the past.

Catbalu: 9000+ kills no cat.  Not happy, not happy at all.

After weeks of farming for this cat, I finally looked on the AH.

And there it was, a lvl 7 black tabby, for only 1,000 gold.

So of course I bought it :D

A black tabby makes an excellent pet for a rogue — they share many of the same traits: stealth, flexibility, agility, an appetite for small rodents... wait... scratch that last one. Unless perhaps you're a worgen rogue.
