This pet is obtained via open-water coastal fishing on the Darkmoon Island. See El's Extreme Anglin's guide: Catching Sea Pony for more information.

Players may only farm for this pet one week per month due to the Darkmoon Island only being accessible the first week out of every month.

The Sea Pony has a unique summoning animation in which the player's hands are enveloped with globes of water, and a splashing animation and noise is made upon the pet's spawning.

I just got my little guy in about 20 casts, I took a SS of me and my new pony and my abyssal seahorse , and submitted to wowhead, cant wait to see it up ><

Im at just over 300 and still no pet. I really dont think this is 1 in 100. I think a bunch of people just got lucky.

Of course as soon as I posted this I got it. 311 casts.

I got this on my 14th cast just 40 ft to the left of the docks.  Not sure it's worth the effort to try and find some special fishing location.

Just had to post cuse a friend told me to fish in front of the DMRabbit cave to have better luck catching this guy (between 10-100 casts) but after more then 100 casts there was nothing. So I checked wowhead and the cords were way off. Its actually an underwater cave about halfway up the east side of the island and out to the edge of the water shelf (when you see the fatige bar your out far enough). You'll see a large sunken ship. Its just below the ship.

 

Second cast. Much better rate.

This pony has been changed since the latest patch, it now has a clear bubble that's bigger, with a white outline. Now you can actually see your sea pony.

Like Luschen, I swam into the cave under the ship and got it on my 4th cast. We either found the best spot or had amazing luck.

I was fishing Shipwreck Debris on a daily basis but only getting Sealed Crates. Today I decided to have a crack at open water fishing and got it on my 28th cast!

Got this on two of my toons today. Not sure if it was luck or the time of day, was around 9-10 am server (Duskwood),only about 25-30 cast each toon. But I was casting only in the shipwreck debris, not sure if that makes a big difference or not. I am happy about a it !! Happy Hunting to all, you will get it !

My guild leader fished it up in 351 casts.

I got mine in between 30-50 casts.

Fellow guildies also had varying catch totals between 50-200.

So I'd say it might even be a 1 in 300 chance.

Between 3pm and 2am yesterday, I got it on 6 of my people. (Also did all the quests, some dungeons and some dinner. :P) Husband had about the same luck on 4 of his toons, but he's been having difficulty getting it on his DK (at 720 casts, still no pet). Any of the water works, but the sealed crates are a lot of fun to open. ^_^ Easy to get most of the time but it's all random.

Edit: Husband got it after 939 casts.

I didn't even know about this new pet, yet... until I was losing heavily on achieving the bullseye for the cannon blasts. I swam up next to the teleporter dude, "O hai thar. Whatchu fishing?"

3 casts. Pony wat?!?!

After the hours I put in fishing up the Sea Turtle and Sewer Rat, I'm not looking forward to fishing up another drop...

UPDATE: Logged at Midnight as soon as the patch came out & did all the Darkmoon Faire quests. 6 hours in, I did the Deathmatch with some friends (as a joke) and ended up winning and getting the achievement.

Went to work on this and 17 casts in, I caught it. This is after I got the Sewer Rat & Oozling drops quickly yesterday.

Fished for 150+ casts in various spots on the island, and while I didn't get the Sea Pony, I did get the funny hat that makes a debris pool.  So I put that on and went to the cave.  Fished for a bit more, not too sure as it was really late, but nothing came up.  Logged off still in the cave and the next day, fished for about 20 minutes when I caught my precious Sea Pony!  I'd say fish the cave, seems to work for lots of folks.  Happy hunting!

Based on the 3 times I've caught one, the rate is closer to 1 in 400 casts. But I have to admit it's worth it. This guy is cute as all get out!

I always wanted a pony when I was a small gnome, but I never imagined I'd find one living in a bubble! No... it's not quite the pony I dreamed of as a child, but it does provide a percolating playmate for my water elemental.
