Patch 4.0.6 Changes and Core Hound Pup Contest

February 08, 2011
UPDATE: The Moonkin Hatchling can now fly along side its owner's flying mount and/or flight form!

Also, there is a bug where Withers and the Teldrassil Sproutling are sharing the model of the old Restoration Druid Tree of Life form. Blizzard devs are aware of the issue and hope to resolve this issue in the future.

Guild Herald
Patch 4.0.6 Is Here!
The Cataclysm patch that many pet collectors have been waiting for has finally arrived! With this latest patch come some changes to two of the guild-rewarded companions, the Armadillo Pup and the Guild Herald. Both of these pets now only required Revered guild rep, down from Exalted.

Congratulations to all those who will have two new pets to add to their collection today, and good luck to those who are still working on building the guild reputation to acquire these two companions! Thanks to the change, there's one less level of reputation to grind. Go, go, go!

Here are a couple of extra vanity pet-related changes to note as detailed in the patch notes listed on MMO-Champion:

  • Additional animations have been added to the Armadillo Pet guild reward.
  • The Disgusting Oozeling no longer applies a debuff which reduces defense, a deprecated stat.

The Return of Two Pets
Blizzard added in two little surprises with this patch, as this change went undocumented in the official patch notes. The Smolderweb Hatchling and Worg Pup have been found! They are now drops from Lower Blackrock Spire!

Blizzard's Core Hound Pup Screenshot Contest
Whether you enjoy watching dog shows or prefer to see something else, this is definitely no ordinary dog show! Blizzard is holding an official screenshot contest to show off your Core Hound Pup. Two of the most memorable images will be chosen each month for the year of 2011 and each winner be receiving a new iPad!

So if you think your Core Hound Pup has what it takes to win Best In Show, be sure to submit your screenshot!

Archaeology Guide and Other WarcraftPets Updates

February 22, 2011
It's been quiet in the world of companion collecting, as many of us are steadfastly completing our post-Cataclysm pet collections. But we're still working to improve WarcraftPets and we've got a bunch of site updates to share!

Archaeology Guide For Pet Collectors
Archaeology Guide For Pet Collectors
First up, our own Doobjanka has written a new guide for WarcraftPets to help newcomers to archaeology.

Doobjanka explains how this fun new secondary skill works and discusses how you can best level the skill with an eye on collecting the three companions it offers. So if you have yet to nab the Fossilized Hatchling, Clockwork Gnome or Crawling Claw, be sure to check out Doobjanka's Archaeology Guide for tips.

Pet Mobility Updates
The mobility stat for every pet in our database has been updated to now show whether the pet will fly alongside a flying mount. All pets have been labeled with one of the following states:

  • Ground
  • Ground (hovers) - these pets won't take flight when you do, but probably should
  • Air (flies alongside flying mount)

Macros for Pet Enthusiasts
We've reworked our Vanity Pet Macros page to make it a little easier to navigate. We also added several new macros, many submitted by members of our community.

Thanks to all of you for your submissions!

An Older Pet is Finally Added
Onyx Panther
Today we added an older Korean-only pet to our database, the Onyx Panther. This pet first appeared over a year ago on Korean servers. However we never added it to the site due to a lack of details about how the pet was obtained.

After more than a year, we unfortunately still don't have any answers about how Korean players were able to collect this pet. But we added it to the site for completeness. If any of our Korean readers do know the details behind the promotion that awarded the pet, contact us — we'd love your help to fill in the blanks.

And for all of you Top Raters out there, don't forget to rate this old gem to earn back your badge.

PTR 4.1: New Pets and Pet Achievements!

February 24, 2011
MMO-Champion has quite a few exciting pet-related tidbits from the latest PTR update!

The Next TCG Pet
Landro's Lichling?
WoW TCG Loot released last month that the next TCG common loot card would be a re-skinned Lil' K.T. It looks as though this new pet has taken shape in the form of Landro's Lichling, which just appeared on the PTR.

New Pets!
Along with Landro's Lichling, three new pets were discovered on the PTR as well as a familiar one:

  • Landro's Lil' XT - Right Click to set down or pick up your Landro's Lil' XT action figure. Instant (Note: This pet currently exists on live servers, however, this "new" version on the PTR may be an updated and re-skinned version)
  • Nightsaber Cub - Right Click to summon and dismiss your Nightsaber Cub.
  • Panther Cub - Right Click to summon and dismiss your panther cub.
  • Winterspring Cub - Right Click to summon and dismiss your Winterspring cub.

There's no information on how to obtain these new pets yet, however, we're hoping for more updates from the PTR in the near future. Perhaps two of them could be rewards for... well, read on!

New Achievements!
Collectors rejoice! Blizzard heard and has responded to our strong desire for higher tier pet-collecting achievements. Now on the PTR, not one, but TWO new achievements:

  • Petting Zoo - Collect 100 unique companion pets.
  • Menagerie - Collect 125 unique companion pets.

Currently there are no rewards listed for completing these achievements. However, there is still some time before the official release of Patch 4.1. Let's keep our fingers crossed!

Upcoming Nightsaber and Winterspring Cubs

February 25, 2011
Nightsaber Cub model
Players on the PTR have already discovered where to find the Nightsaber Cub and the Winterspring Cub! This leaves only the Panther Cub without a known home, but there's still plenty of time to poke around on the test realms.

Nightsaber Cub - New TCG Loot
Currently on the PTR, Landro Longshot has the Nightsaber Cub listed as a TCG redeemable item. The trading card expansion deck in which the Nightsaber Cub will likely be featured as the common loot card is called "Twilight of the Dragons." According to WoW TCG Loot, this set is due for release in late June.

Winterspring Cub - Updated Alliance Mount Quest
As the name indicates, this item can be found in Winterspring on the PTR. At the moment there are two Winterspring Cubs available, however, only one is a true vanity pet.

Winterspring Cub model
One cub will be part of the revamped Winterspring Frostsaber mount quest chain. Much like the Horde Venomhide Ravasaur mount dailies, the Alliance will have a baby Winterspring Cub to care for during their quest for a Frostsaber mount. This cub cannot be used outside of the questing zone, and it is not a trainable spell.

Do not despair, though! There is still a possibility that an actual vanity pet version will be available. A vendor located in Everlook on the PTR sells a Winterspring Cub for 50 gold. Hopefully she will still have enough cute little cubs to go around once Patch 4.1 goes live.
