General Info
Q: I have a pet-related question. Where should I go?
A: First, I'd suggest looking over the Companion Pet Q&A. It provides a great introduction to the subject and answers many of the most common questions about these adorable companions. Topics include:
- Companion Basics
- Combat and Companions
- Owning a Companion Pet
- Collecting Companion Pets
- Collector's Editions
If you decide you might like to begin a collection of your own, you might also check out the Minipet Collecting Guide, which is full of tips and tricks for getting the most out of pet collecting and this site.
Q: I have a pet-related suggestion. Can you pass it along to Blizzard?
A: WarcraftPets.com is not affiliated with Blizzard, nor do we have any official ties with Blizzard employees. If you're eager to share a suggestion for a new pet or a pet-related change with the game developers, your best bet is to do so at the official WoW Suggestions Forum.
Q: I'm new to this site. Do you have any tips?
A: My best advice is to poke around and explore a bit. But if specific tips are what you seek, here are some random tips that might help.
Q: Where can I learn more about the creator of this site?
A: Check out the Q&A with the site creator.
Q: Do you have an advertising or affiliate program?
A: I intend to begin (tastefully) advertising on this site in late 2008. There are no official programs yet, but I'm open to ideas. Provided you're not in the business of gold selling, power leveling, or pushing PDF gold/leveling guides, contact me.
Q: Can you add a model viewer for each pet?
A: I'd very much like to, but honestly I just don't know what's involved. If anyone has any information on how I might go about adding a model viewer plugin, let me know.
Account Management
Q: How do I become a site member?
A: Signing up for site membership is easy! All you need is a valid email address. To create your account, click here.
Q: Can I become a member without having to give out my email address?
A: No. A working email address is required for site membership. You can be confident that your email address will remain private and that you will NEVER receive junk email from this site. Trust me—I hate spam as much as you do.
Q: I'm having trouble creating my account. What should I do?
A: The suggestions here can assist users who experience difficulty signing up.
Q: Can I create more than one account?
A: Creating more than one account is permissible, but you will need multiple valid email addresses; one for each account.
Q: How can I change my username and password?
A: Only an administrator can change a member's username and password. Contact me to request such a change. Please state your reason for the request.
Q: Can I permanently delete my account?
A: Only an administrator can delete an account. Contact me if you wish to delete your account. Please state your reason for the request.
Q: If I don't log in for a while, does my account expire?
A: Yes. Members who are inactive for more than a year are automatically deleted from the system.
Community Concerns
Q: How can I contact another member?
A: You can use the site's messaging feature to send private messages to other members.
Q: Does this site have any rules?
A: Yes. The rules are clearly spelled out in the User Guidelines. All users of this site are expected to abide by the rules.
Q: Who moderates this site?
A: Site Admins moderate and maintain WarcraftPets.com. Currently, I, Breanni, am the only site admin, but I am seeking help.
Q: Will you know if I lie about my collection?
A: Yes. And if I don't know right away, I'll find out soon enough.
Sometimes, dishonest members report a false collection to rise to the top of the Top 50 collections list. This is a clear violation of the User Guidelines. My vast knowledge of minipets gives me a sixth sense about whether a collection is legitimate. If I'm suspicious, I'll request proof in the form of very specific screenshots emailed to me within 24-48 hours. Members who do not provide undoctored proof will receive disciplinary actions.
Keep in mind, the point of the Top 50 list is not to promote cutthroat competition. It exists to inspire new collectors and to showcase the achievements of long-standing collectors for all of their hard work.
Q: What happens if I break a rule or two?
A: I am fair-minded, but I have little tolerance for misconduct. I employ a three strikes and you're out philosophy. Members who break the rules once will typically receive a warning. A second offense will result in a second warning, plus the member's account(s) will be flagged, thereby limiting site priviledges. Any final offenses will result in the permanent suspension/removal of the member's account(s). Attempts to create additional accounts will be blocked.
Note that I reserve the right to flag or suspend a member at any time if I believe the circumstances warrant such an action. I also reserve the right to deny any offending visitor access to the site entirely.
If you choose to become a member of this community, please respect the rules and keep your demeanor light and fun. After all, this site is all about fun. I ask that you do your part to preserve that spirit while logged into your account.
Q: I was flagged because of misconduct. So what?
A: Members who receive their second warning (or first, based on the severity of the offense) are flagged by the system. Such users are ineligible for a Top 50 ranking. Additionally, all comments made by flagged members are hidden from public view. Furthermore, the ability to message other users is disabled. Finally, so long as a member remains flagged, he/she will be ineligible for MVP status.
Over time, if a flagged member behaves and supports the site in positive ways, the flag may be removed at the discretion of an admin.
Q: How do I report someone who's breaking the rules?
A: If you wish to report another member for a comment he/she made, click the [Report] link found directly adjacent to the comment.
If you suspect someone has reported a false collection, simply contact me and report the member by name. I'll investigate the matter as soon as I receive your grievance.
Q: Why are some members shown in green and others in orange?
A: Members whose names appear in green are Site MVPs. These individuals have supported the site in major ways.
Members whose names appear in orange are Top Raters, indicating that they've taken the time to provide a rating for every pet on the site.
Q: How do I become a Top Rater?
A: Simply provide a rating for all 98 pets. Note that when a new pet is added to the site, this title expires. However, it can be immediately restored once a rating is provided for the new pet.
Q: Can I ever change my rating for a particular pet?
A: No. Once you cast your vote, it cannot be changed.
Q: How are the Top 50 rankings determined?
A: The Top 50 collections are ranked based on the following criteria:
- FIRST: The number of pets collected (more pets = higher ranking).
- SECOND: The number of pets excluded (less exclusions = higher ranking).
- THIRD: The last time the member was online (more recent = higher ranking).
Q: Will this site ever get a forum?
A: Perhaps, but I make no promises.
I'm aware of how useful and fun a forum would be for WarcraftPets.com. I've decided that if I'm going to implement one, it will have to come later, after I complete some other projects for the site.
So while it is possible, it won't be happening any time soon. For now, I encourage members to use their community comments and messaging to share with one another.
Collection Management
Q: Some pets aren't listed on this site. Why?
A: This site is dedicated exclusively to small pets. To be considered a small pet, the entity in question must meet ALL of the following criteria:
- The entity must have the tag of <companion> or <pet> when selected in-game. For example: <Breanni's companion>.
- When summoned, the entity will automatically unsummon any other small pet that the player has out.
- The entity will remain when summoned and will not disappear in a preset amount of time.
- The summoning item is not involved in the completion of a quest.
- The entity is strictly cosmetic and has no real impact on player-based combat.
You're free to collect items that do not fall under this site's definition of a small pet, but they will not be added to the database. However, if you wish to report a small pet that meets these criteria and is missing from the site, you may do so here.
Q: How do I set up my pet collection?
A: To set up your collection, you will first need to sign in to your account. Then go to the My Collection page to manage your collection. From there you can update your collection, enabling you to do the following:
- Exclude any pets from your collection that you have no intention of collecting. Note that it's best to do this step first, before checking off any pets.
- Check off each pet in your collection. Please be honest—false collections are a violation of the User Guidelines.
- Choose whether your collection spans one character or multiple characters.
- When you've checked off all of your collected pets, click the 'SAVE LIST' button at the bottom of your checklist.
You may return to the 'My Collection' page and check off additional pets whenever you wish to update your collection.
Q: Why are some collections marked with a dot and others with a plus sign?
A: A dot (•) denotes that the member's collection was collected by a single character. A plus sign (+) indicates that the collection spans multiple characters. Initially, all collections are set up as multiple-character collections.
Q: How do I change my collection to a single-character collection?
A: Sign in and go to the Update Collection page. At the very bottom of your checklist, you'll see the words, "My collection spans:" along with two options. Select the option for "one character" and save your list.
Q: Can I track my collection for both a single character and multiple characters?
A: Yes and no. No, you can't do this with a single account. But because of this restriction, I invite members to create an additional account, using one account to track their multiple-character collection and the other to track their single-character collection.
Q: I need help getting a certain pet. Will you help me?
A: Sorry, I cannot help you collect your pets in-game. But I'd be happy to continue to support your collecting efforts by regularly updating and maintaining this site.
Supporting the Site
Q: I love WarcraftPets.com, so how can I help?
A: There are many ways you can help. Donations made through PayPal are a great start. There are also other ways to help that cost nothing except a bit of your time.
Q: How will my donation be used?
A: Donations are primarily used to support my monthly operating expenses. I use any extra funds to support site contests and other WarcraftPets.com projects.
Q: I'd like to donate, but I don't have a PayPal account. What can I do?
A: If you don't have a PayPal account, you can easily create one. PayPal offers safe and secure transactions without the need to repeatedly divulge credit card information. After you've set up your PayPal account, you can easily submit your donatation.
Q: I'm unable to donate. Can I still become a site MVP?
A: Yes. Members who freely offer their time to help support the site and the community are considered for MVP status. This type of support includes regularly sharing news, offering encouragement to the community, writing guides, and helping others when the opportunity arises.
If you think you've earned the title of MVP, please contact me and offer a gentle reminder of your past and present good deeds.
Q: How I do I submit a guide?
A: I'd be happy to consider adding your guide, provided it's a good fit for this site. To learn more about what's required to submit a guide, click here.
Q: Can I volunteer as a site administrator?
A: I welcome volunteers, but there is a lengthy screening process.
If a Site Admin position is available, you may submit the application form. Remember, this is an unpaid position, akin to an internship... but I'd be happy to write you a FANTASTIC recommendation!
