Account-wide levelling?

Are your pets supposed to keep the levels that they gain on one alt for all of your alts (i.e. level a pet up to level 5, then switch to another alt and the pet is still level 5) or should their leveling be separate for each character (i.e. level up a pet to level 5, then switch to another alt and that pet is level 1)?

The levels should work across the account.

I copied over 4 of my characters. I've only tried pet battling on two of them, but the pet levels, and unlocked slots carry over. The trainer quests don't.

Repeating the trainer quests with the same team across alts is a nice little EXP boost, too
