Percentage based damage

Postby Vek » February 20th, 2014, 1:42 pm

Haven’t played around much with these kind of attacks before. They always felt kind of weak. Way back when I started pet battling I tried stuff like Glowing Toxin, 6% damage(84 damage a turn on a 1400 health pet), or tried Trample with it’s 10% damage component in a Sunlight environment. Neither felt very useful at the time. And I never really felt Corpse Explosion was a valid option.

Today I was playing around with Infected Squirrel and just because I wanted to try something different I decided to use Corpse Explosion. I was not blown away as such, though the Squirrel was, but still found it an interesting experience. It was quite nice move to do on your Undead turn, or the turn just before. 15% initial damage was about 244 damage, and the dot component came to 70(on a 1400 health pet) damage a turn(lasting 4 rounds).

What I did notice was that since it’s a percentage based damage it was not affected by opponents shields, in this case Stone Skin. Also even though it was “undead” damage it didn’t count as strong vs the Idol, and also it didn’t count as weak vs a Strider. So same damage no matter what. Not even when I used Stampede did it do more damage. I don’t know if it could crit, but I guess not.

Corpse Explosion worked out better than I expected, so I decided to give Glowing Toxin another shot. 6% for 5 turns(the turn you cast plus last for 4) equals about 420 damage, not that bad if you look at the total. I guess the biggest issue with Glowing Toxin is Firefly ability set. But one positive with percentage based damage is that you can focus on health and speed instead, since power won’t help you. I was thinking of throwing Glowing Toxin and then switching to another pet. This worked reasonably well actually. Though it is annoying when facing humanoids since their self-heal kind of evens out the toxin, but on the other hand you can look at it that it’s the other way around.

Well I just got the feeling that these kind of attacks were not as bad as I initially thought, especially Glowing Toxin and Corpse Explosion. I have not yet revisited Trample. Though I don’t think Toxic Skin will ever be “worth” it. Costs a turn to cast, and with a speed of 276 you are not that likely to go first. But perhaps if you are up against a multi attack pet it will start to ramp up.

Anyone has any experience with these attacks?

I used these pretty frequently early on in strats vs single-pet mobs (ie, Beasts of Fable). These moves aren't affected by the Boss percentage reduction, so they do the full amount of damage to those huge health pools, but they're also not affected by either percentage boosts or Wild Magic-type per hit boosts either, making them a weaker choice overall than a debuff stacking strat (imo). Corpse Explosion could be a cool thing to try here, as a last ditch, 'I'M TAKING YOU WITH ME' move.

Yes, not being able to buff them in any way is bad. But they do have the advantage of not being affected by Sandstorm/Shell etc, if on their own.

Nice tip versus Fable.

The only downside with Corpse Explosion compared to Explode is that to get full use of Corpse Explosion you need your opponent to have health left to let the dot-part tick for a couple of turns. But on the Squirrel I found it more useful than consume, though stampede buffed consume is very nice the squirrel is quite slow so you are not that certain to get the heal off in time. On the Infested Bear Cub I just think Mangle is a lot more useful than Corpse Explosion. Not very sure about the Gulp Froglet, just isn't my favourite pet, perhaps I'll be forced to use it someday in the Battle with that Pet thread.

Piercing shields is a neat mechanic: if they would document this 'feature' of %-based attacks and expand on it a bit, I think it would be a nice addition to the game.

Trample is really terrible, because it's split into 10 base dmg, and 10% opponent health. The 10 base damage is affected by shields, so Trample suffers from a shield just as much as any regular single-hit attack. And the 10 base damage benefits from power, while the 10% health benefits from opponent health. So if you choose PP, then you only get half the benefit of that extra power when you use Trample. This would be so much better as 20% opponent health instead.

I like Trample only because it's a nice demonstration that they really intended 10 base damage to be equal to 10% health.

Drain Blood is the most interesting %-based ability right now, but that's more to do with the sheer numbers than being %-based. 10% damage and 30% heal, which is extremely potent for a 3 turn cd.

Have you tried Drain Blood with Sunlight? You are looking at an obscenely large heal then.

Yeah. They are generally pretty weak when it comes to normal pet battles but can be pretty useful against BoF or similar pets with High health and a dmg reduction buff. Sunlight and two explode pets is the team I use for one of the BoF and it works well.
