Question about petbattle format

I was just wondering if my opponent just now quit the battle or was removed from the battle. When I joined I saw his pets were called "just forfeit" "im afk" "u mad". However I was thinking I was just starting pet battles so I was going to fight him anyway lol even though it would obviously take a while for him to pass each time. However when he didn't select his first pet the pet battle ended and I won. Did he leave or do you just get removed if you don't select your first pet?

I had a guy who was winning (literally, my last pet had 18hp, he had 1 at full health and one at half health), and just quit using his turns. Possibly he d/c'd, but the battle kept going. I thought it very strange.
