Player experience question

From the patch notes:

"Players that are not level capped will receive player experience for winning a Pet Battle against a pet that is within 5 levels of the player's highest level pet (in the collection)."

Does this mean that once you have 1 level 25 pet, that you can only get (player) experience from battling pets in higher than level 20? Or does is mean in the team?

I was hoping to level a new char using pet battles (just for the sheer hell of it), but I'm not sure if this will work now.
Has anyone tried this and if so, what is the situation?

thanks

Grab a toon that is not level 90, and go fight some wild pet with pets the same level as it and see.

I'm at work right now, so I can't try this out until later on tonight. I'll try it out, of course, but my curiosity overcame my patience :-)

I haven't tested this out on live servers yet, but during my testing on the PTR, if you had a level 25 pet in your collection, you only got experience from battling level 20+ pets.

This is obviously problematic for low level players, since they can't easily access higher level zones where those pets are (Netherstorm and Shadowmoon Valley in Outlands or Borean Tundra and Howling Fjord in Northrend are the lowest player level areas where lvl 20+ pets spawn).

If this still holds true, then you'll probably need to team up with a high level player to escort you around those zones.

I have leveled from 12% into lvl 87 to lvl 89 in roughly 2 hours and 50 minutes, fighting pet battles in the dwarven starting area, using lvl 1 pets in a team, swapping through them all each battle, and earning 162k each battle when they are lvl 1, descending down to 114k when they ding lvl 5.

My thoughts is that Blizz will nerf the xp to the ground, if not into some subterranean dungeon when they do rolling restarts this morning. No way could they meant to give lvl 1 pet battles more xp gain than a daily.

So the level doesn't depend on the highest level pet in your collection? That's really good news for low level characters that can't make their way to high level zones! :)

It is the lvl of the pets on your team. All of them have to be within 5 lvls of the pets you are battling.
It seems lvl 89 cuts off xp gain from pet battles also.
My 89 gets no xp from battles, but when fighting wilds in Pandaria, am getting Lesser Charms of Good Fortune. 2 battles, one against lvl 23, one against lvl 25, got 11 total.
A lvl 10 toon, wearing full heirlooms, not in a guild, gets ~1.3-1.4k xp from battling a lvl 1 wild with a lvl 1 team.

I managed to try this out for about an hour last night.
Started with a new lvl 1 char and battled stormwind rats, levelling 3 pets from lvl 1 to lvl 6.
At the end of that time, my char was lvl 12. If it carries on like this, I'll be doing LFR by the weekend !! (except that it apparently stops at 89).

I wonder how long it will be before this gets nerfed.

Well based on the numbers I've seen so far around Half Hill while levelling my pets, it will take about 140 battles to level from 85 to 86, and again from 86 to 87.

I don't know if it carries on at that rate though.

Arve,
addled alt.

Tested something and Id like to share.

Grab one pet level 5 on slot 1. 2 other pets lower than 5 in the other slots and battle level 1 pets in capital cities. Great and fast XP.

Enjoy leveling faster than ever.

I have spent a ton of gold buying lvl one vendor cats and leveling them to 2 or 3 in a group, letting each one get in one attack down in Coldridge Valley. When they are all lvl 2-3, cage them and delete them. It is a rather easy formula, long as your pets are within five levels, you get XP, closer they are, the more XP. And keeping my bags full, it is working out to roughly 1% of a level, per minute of time, including caging and deleting pets and running to mailbox.
This has held true from lvl 87 to lvl 89, and lvl 85 to lvl 87.

Which also leads me to fully believe massive nerf is coming. Ain't no way Blizz is going to allow leveling at 1% of level, per minute, from 85 to 89.

A hotfix for the amount of experience earned from Pet Battles is coming soon. (source)

Well....
BRB, going to make a pot of coffee and call business partner to let him know I won't be working tomorrow.
I have toons to level.

And Quintessence, the "proper WoW terminology or phrasing" is "fun detected, nerf incoming, ;)

Gets pretty old.
Put XP into BGs, and soon as it is a viable leveling strat beyond delivering "x"/finding "x"/digging in poo, it gets nerfed.
Same with Arch, pays good XP, lets make the spawn points happen a 10 minute FP away, to make it too slow to be viable.
Pet battles, "oops, people might rather level this way, in a reasonable time frame, let's hotfix it and make them dig through poo".

Dunno.
I have 50 toons scattered across the servers.
Ain't nary of them have 1500 quests completed.

I'd rather spend hours killing mobs, getting loot, XP and skins, or picking flowers, than run another go take "x" to "y", or kill "w" for "z's".

Claaswolff was/is my pet collector. From the days when pets stayed in your bags until today.
Leveling alts via pet battles is/was a good thing.
Calling it an error, and taking it away?
Yeah, one more straw on that crippled, beat up and lame camel's back, just saying.

Oh well - looks like it was too good to last :-(
I hope they don't nerf it down to the point of being totally useless.

Tested it last night for a bit, got 70k-ish xp per battle, now it is only 7k-ish xp on low level pet fights in the city. Gonna hop over to Pandaria and see how much I get there.

[edit]

And a battle against the first wild team I found in the Jade Forest (lelvel 24), yielded me a little over 100k xp.

So it seems low level fights are out of the question for leveling.

[edit 2]

And 96k xp roundabouts against a lvl23 team.

Seems they scaled the xp gained of the level of the team you are fighting now. Which seems more or less logical, that you have to go out to level appropriate areas to get your xp.

So yes, it is still viable but you have to get out of the cities now.

There was nothing reasonable about the amount of xp that was being given for pet battles.

Was that with rested? I was getting 205k-210k with rested and darkmoon buff, team was leech/25/25 against 24s and 25s in eternal blossoms last night but dunno if that was post or pre-hotfix.

Oh, I was 88 shaman. Used safari hat but doubt that matters

While I agree that getting 200k XP for battling level 1 pets in SW isnt reasonable the nerf applied doesnt make appealing to level with pet battling when u get 30k XP to battle lvl 25 pets.

My xp numbers are with rested bonus. Might be the zones mattered. Tested it on a level 86 Shaman in The Jade Forest.

Maybe, I'll test when I get home but my base just with rested as 170k give or take. If its percentile of total based it might be accurate (86 is 18mil, 88 is 22mil)
