Pet classification

I just joined this site today and was exploring when I notice that as I viewed my collection there are also classifications of epic and legendary pets. Are these something you just come upon by chance? Also, is there a way to tell if a wild pet is poor, common, etc before a battle or do you just find out when you initiate the battle?

As far as I know there isn't any way to tell what quality the pets have before the battle starts. And epic and legendary pets are so far only seen with trainers and the beast of fables. None for us poor mortals.

There is no way to tell what quality (green, blue, etc) a pet is or what stats it has before the battle starts.
Blizzard has talked about adding epic pets for players at some point, but there are no details on this yet. Probably not until next expansion.
