Battle pets vs companion pets

Post by Arkyle » September 29th, 2012, 4:26 am

The AH seems to have 2 slots now, battle pets and companion pets. What's the difference? The battle pets part includes all the rare pets that would have taken a lot of grinding/time/money to get normally, but it seems these can now be freely traded. Have I missed something somewhere in the patch notes? If I buy an aqua strider battle pet, does that now count as a companion as well?

All battle pets are considered companions. But not all companions are battle pets (meaning not all companions are able to engage other pets in battle). We'll add a filter to our pet filters so you can easily pull the ones that don't battle. Off the top of my head, this list includes:

· All balloons and kites
· Guild Page
· Guild Herald
· Argent Squire / Argent Gruntling

I may have missed a few.

I am right in saying then that essentially there is no such thing as a BOP/profession/quest only pet anymore. From what I've read, even TCG pets can now be traded on the AH. I'm not sure how I feel about this change. Part of the appeal of collecting was that the top collectors weren't just people with the most money, it was people who went out of their way to find them. Oh well, guess that's gone now.

The Companion Pets category is for pet-learning items.
The Battle Pets category is for pets that have been learnt, possibly trained, and then caged.

In case anyone reading this thread doesn't know yet, you can't cage wild pets to sell. And some of the old pets can't be sold, either.

I don't mind the two categories, but I think it's confusing the AH still has companion pets under Misc. People might not realize there are two places to find pets to buy. There should be a category for Small Pets, and then Battle Pets and Companion Pets (or perhaps some name that's less confusing) should be subcategories under the main category.
Some of my best friends are imaginary…

And you can get some of the rarer pets for pennies at the AH. I picked up Speedy, and some other seasonal pets, for pennies. Some people just seemed to want to get rid of them (I guess they had multiple characters with the pets). So if there's a pet you're looking for, check the Battle Pets section of the AH. Oddly enough, the pets in the Companion Pets section still seemed to be the usual prices.

One thing to note is that certain achievements isn't marked off if you learn a caged pet, a case of that is the Veteran Nanny achievement with the Children's Week pets, you have to actually have your character learn the Base item for it to be marked off...

Pet collection achievements still works presumably as indended.
