On one hand it's nice to have something very few people have but on the other the wrong people are profiting from it. At the end of the day, however you jazz it up, all pets and mounts are are 1's and 0's. Digital goods in a digtal world. Should WoW end tomorrow, your £300 mount you bought on eBay is worthless.
I don't think you should see it as a "future proof" investment, but more as a thing to enjoy right now.
And if you really want to see it that way, any goal, item, achievement, gold, level in WOW is worth nothing as it's all 1's and 0's.
I'd like to see old pets and mounts from deleted acheivements, old TCG packs, Blizzard Store/collectors editions etc. be available to all. Be it through the online store or through the Black Market AH or similar (just needs more stock).
The Black Market AH could be a good solution for pets and mounts that were "regular content" as in achievement rewards, quest rewards etc. and available to any regular player really, while I do not think that it would ever be right or fair towards those players who actually paid money or participated in promos/BlizzCons etc. to make those collector edition / TCG / Blizzcon mounts/pets available to everyone. That content has to stay exclusive to keep collector editions/TCG legit. And while it's fun to get as many pets together as possible it's just perfectly fine that not everyone can obtain "every pet ever available in wow" due to those restrictions.
