The Squirky Mystery

Postby Britty » November 2nd, 2016, 7:26 am

It's been a long wait since legion dropped, and it's finally November. However, it seems the pet journal updated and it no longer says "November", and instead a "special time". It definitely said November when I checked like a few weeks ago, so it must be a 7.1 change.

Image

It's source is a pet battle, and the location is "The Great Sea". Which is... really huge. Does anyone have any ideas of where to potential search? I'm going to go look around where Terky was found first, but now I'm worried it might not be up with the tool tip change.

edit: Did see something interesting that was added in 7.1 when looking on wowhead: http://www.wowhead.com/npc=113589/invis ... rky-target

Seabreak Island off the shore of Azsuna has tons of elite lvl 110 murlocs there called Squigglefin something. Also a bunch of eggs that show "Pristine Squigglefin Egg" when moving the cursor over them. There's a huge pearl there as well, guarded by a huge murloc, and I found another pearl off the shore south of Isle of the Watchers also in Azsuna (in the water). None of that might be related though, and the pearls weren't interactable, maybe they would if some criteria were met (I went on an alt, so no artifact research, X amount of world quests completed, fishing artifact, etc.)

Wasn't the original flavour text for Squirky something like "In november ..." rather than "during a special time of year"? Which led to people speculate it to be the Blizzcon pet.

Well, I don't have much in the way of ideas but other potential murloc hotspots in the Broken Isles would be the bottom right area in Stormheim and the very top of Highmountain. The problem here is that we know from the Kosumoth flag quest how much Blizzard likes their super secret hidden underground ocean caves out in the fatigue zone.

I feel like the anniversary event might be relevant to this what with the 'special time of year" talk. Unfortunately I'm old now and my play time is a bit too limited to investigate this the way that I'd like to.

Nice to see that there are more people that are actually curious about Squirky and his whereabouts. :ugeek:

Here are some things I found while looking for Squirky...

There have actually been a number of unused or unknown spells datamined since 7.0.3 that refer to Squirky or Squigglefin murlocs. It seems wowhead.com doesn't properly show them as updated for 7.1. If you take a closer look at the spells, you might notice that they possibly hint to an escort quest with ambush or something along those lines. Maybe we get Squirky from a questchain or he is a questgiver similar to the Falcosaurs?

There are also datamined references to "Squigglefin Tadpoles" both as critters and humanoids in the game files since 7.0.3.

I'm not to familiar with American idioms, but I always thought that "a special time of the year" is a political correct term for the time around Christmas and Hanukkah. We might actually get Squirky as a Winter Veil present.

My Underlight Angler with 13 traits didn't trigger anything at or around Seabreak Isle yet. At the moment I'm trying to get my Kalu'ak reputation to exalted to see if I can interact with the captured Tuskarr. Nothing happened at revered. One odd thing about the island is the fact that it has its own spirit healer.
There are also two spawn locations for a treasure chest that is only visible at 110. On my Horde DH it spawned near the area where the Pristine Squigglefin Eggs are located. On my main Alliance Paladin it spawned opposite of the captives below the hung pirate. My DH got an additional reputation token while the Paladin only got the usual Order Hall resources and some vendor trash.

There is still the possibility that Squirky is part of the promotion for the "World of Warcraft: Traveler" book(s). The first one was published on Oct. 25th in the US and will be available from Nov. 3rd in Europe.

After searching a lot of ocean areas I also found a huge skeleton north of Shield's Rest at the fatigue border that has a number of "Lifeless Murlocs" floating in the water. These are level 100 deepsea murlocs at full health. NE of that location there is also an empty cave.
At the SE edge of the Broken Shore you can find a sunken ruin that looks like a Jinyu building. Keep in mind that Jinyu are a murloc sub-race.
While I doubt that these places are related to Squirky, it seems that Blizzard's art department either had a lot of time to design the ocean floor or there are still some hidden things to be found.

Yes, I'm almost positive it said "In November".

I have definitely heard Christmas be referred to as "the most wonderful time of the year" but I don't know about "special". Maybe in some parts of the US? And thanks for the Jinyu building stuff! I'm super curious about that now, too.

I went to the locations marked in the "Traveler" book and found a water area in Feralas. At coordinates 51/45 I found a "Squeaky Duck Bobber", definitely a new change. I tried fishing there but nothing happend. Would somebody with the artifact fishing pole and a "Duck-Bobber" try his/her luck?

You're absolutely right in that Squirky's Pet Journal description did mention November!

Here's the old flavor text: "During November, a secretive clan of murlocs often sends young tadpoles out to explore, adventure, and begin their tale."

Perhaps they changed it because they didn't want to give it away too easily? Or maybe plans have changed and whatever was supposed to occur in November might be delayed/pushed back? "Special time" gives them more leeway.

Perculia noted on Twitter that there's a new yellow murloc plush in one of the new Blizzard Merch advertisements. (second image, there's a yellow murloc being held up next to the giant red dragon)

So another possibility is a new plush + pet code coming some time in November (or later)? Maybe a plush tied with the new Traveler's book.

Special Time of Year + November could equal Anniversary.

I'm pretty sure there's a Corgi for the anniversary...but maybe we're getting two pets again? We can only hope!
Thaliana#1794 - My WoW account has 50 toons, so I would so greatly appreciate people creating toons on Kael'Thas or Ghostlands to trade with me. <3

Squirky could be the FoS pet, while the Corgi Pup might be tied to some in-game activities.

There's also an tiny chance that Squirky might be part of to the 25th anniversary celebration at the BlizzCon.

I tried fishing there with the Underlight Angler, but nothing happened either. I used both the "Murloc Head" and the "Squeaky Duck" fishing bobber for a bit. Using the personal murloc egg toy from Suramar didn't trigger anything and nothing to see with spectral sight.

After that I went for a small swimming trip around the sunken "Isle of Dread", but the old Naga caves seem to be inaccessible or gone.

Update: Since Darkmoon Island is also located somewhere within "The Great Sea", I went there and started exploring the underwater borders near the fatigue zones. Although I discovered a lot of trenches where I would hide a murloc egg, it doesn't seem that anyone from Blizzard did. Maybe we should try fishing there?

I was hoping someone would bring this up at Blizzcon but it seems not to be happening. I don't have a Twitter account but would it be workable to ask someone like Feasel if this pet is even in the live game yet?

Another small update from my search. I've visited Seabreak Isle a couple of times on different characters by now. Both treasure chests I found seem to be rare spawns that can be looted multiple times. Today I got both chests on my Horde DH, but of course no Odd Murloc Egg. There however was something that made me a little curious. These murlocs occasionally drop Lighting-Struck Hammer. My sample size is probably rather small, but did any of you guys get any other grey item from killing Squigglefin murlocs?

I also went to the pirate cave Manta mentioned in the old Squirky thread with my DH, but again there wasn't anything to see with spectral sight. As far as I know the traveler book includes pirates in its story. Did any of you who read the book get a hint about anything related to Stormheim?

I don't have the book myself, so I did some online research. I found:

But the journey is hindered by Greydon’s compass, which never points north. If the compass isn't leading Aram and Makasa home--to safety--to what destiny is it leading them?

Curious, I checked out Wowhead for 'compass' that had been added in Legion. I came across one that leaves me curious:

Varian's Compass

It's not Greydon's Compass, but it 'shows you the way'. Not *north*. Just *the way*.

The only other possibility is Broken Compass, which is a basic grey item (no clue where to get it) and while there might be connection somewhere, it's a grey; I doubt it has any connection with the NPC.

Just spitballing, of course.

EDIT: After reading more deeply, my suspicion on the compass being Varian's is actually stronger; the compass seems to be *very* interesting to a lot of NPCs in the book.

Greydon also sounds like an allusion to Greymane; I'm not suggesting any direct Gilnean business, but he feels responsible for avenging Varian after all.
Perhaps a stretch anyway, or a trap considering the naming convention in Traveler. (: But hey, a don…

Still, that sounds more and more like that book was written just for these crazy folks looking for the hidden meanings, what can't be true. I'm done.

EDIT: And now I can't get rid of feeling that there's going to be a lot of teasing that is supposed to cause deception and overload.
If there is such much ado about Squirky, I'm afraid of what they are going to do with Stormcrow!

Could the new holiday event coming in 7.1.5

March of the Tadpoles (New) - Today, the baby Winterfin murlocs of Borean Tundra complete their trip across the Westrift.

be were he's from? And that's why his description of November was changed? Just a thought.

It's *possible*. However, the 'Westrift' is something that is specifically in Borean Tundra, and they are completely different murlocs than Squirky. Still, there's a strong possibility that there's some relation. I definitely can't help but feel there's going to be some tie-ins with stuff.

I'm especially excited about the 'gong' one. That's no doubt going to bring back some old mobs and/or gear that had been lost to time. Potentially stuff from back in the original 'opening of Ahn'Qiraj' days. :)

.... but this is about Squirky. ;)

While I don't get the impression that Ion Hazzikostas is an honest person, I doubt that he actually lied about the rewards of micro-holidays during BlizzCon. He stated that there won't be any mounts, battle pets, power rewards or achievements for participating in them.

The tadpoles at that micro-holiday are most likely all from the Winterfin tribe as hinted by the datamined strings and probably only contain references to the Highmountain Murky quests. Also that part of the ocean is called "The North Sea".

My best guess at the moment is that Squirky is either part of some kind of yet unknown or "hidden" event that activates at a certain time of the year and last for some time, or it's a reward from a postponed/canceled promotion for the book series, like Black Friday or something similar.

I wasn't aware of that. As such, knowing that, I'm *definitely* much more sure they're unrelated. Although it's still interesting. :D

That's what I'm thinking. There's too many things already in the game for it. I'm doing some hunting; if I happen to find anything while doing so, I'll definitely be speaking up.
