Killing pets after checking rarity.

Post by Hooter » July 2nd, 2014, 10:32 am

I've been trying to get some pets lately. I was wondering if I concede to a pet and kill it with my character afterwards, would it have a chance to spawn as rare? Or would I need to defeat it in the pet battle? Or are there any other reasons I shouldn't do this?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Hooter,
When you enter a fight and leave without killing any pets on the other team, the wild pet will reappear and will be the exact same fight that you first encountered. This is good if you're hunting for rare pets using a separate team to soak the forfeit health loss (when you forfeit a battle each of your pets lose 10% of their current health). So when your 'search' team finds a rare, you can leave the battle, swap to your 'capture' team and get the pet that way :)

If you're hunting pets with friends, and either you or they find a rare you're looking for, they can forfeit when you get to where they are to enter the battle yourself (or they do the same with you). I'm not sure if this is frowned upon or not though.

If you enter a fight and kill 1 or more of the pets on the other team, and forfeit/complete the battle, that pet will not reappear, and if another wild pet spawns in its place, it will be a different one. An example would be you enter a fight with a rabbit, and you find its poor quality, so you kill it and the battle ends. If another rabbit spawns in the same place, it could be another rarity, or it could just be another poor (but not the first rabbit you killed).

This is good if you're in a high spawn area and want to have more chances at spawning a high quality pet, in which case you start each pet battle, check its rarity, and if its not what you're looking for, kill it in pet battle or leave and kill it with your character. If there are other pet battlers with you, it would be best to avoid killing wild pets that you aren't after, in case what you deem no good is actually what they're happy with / looking for.

Hope this helps!

Alright, thanks.

I'm still killing most of them because it's frustrating to start looking for a rare and every pet I fight is gray or white because someone just left them there. Then I need to start killing every pet in that spot to get better respawns. Depends if they are hard to find or not tough.

Yeah I often feel that way when you spend ages fighting pets and all there seems to be is bad quality ones. But now that I'm levelling pets those bad quality ones are excellent experience fodder ^_^ haha

I've often wondered what others think of this practice. For me, I would hope that someone hunting for rares in an area would kill the ones that are not rare so that I don't also have to engage the same lesser pets. Of course this doesn't apply to the ones you're likely to stone anyway ([pet]Minfernal[/pet], [pet]Unborn Val'kyr[/pet]).

Assuming most people would tend to accept this practice, where would you draw the line? Many harder to get pets are still easy enough to come back for later and I'd assume most people are still looking for a rare version. Would you kill off pets like:
Emerald Proto-Whelp / Scourged Whelpling
Baby Monkey / Arctic Fox Kit / Slithid Hatchling
Warpstalker Hatchling (Lots of points, but really slow respawn)
Cogblade Raptor
Stunted Yeti
Crow
Giraffe Calf

For me, I'd probably clear all of the above with the exception of Giraffe Calf. That one's hard enough to get in any quality.

So, what pets would you/wouldn't you clear?

Waste of time to hunt for rares If you are swimming in battle stones. Just get one of the correct breed and upgrade it later.

I did the same back when I was still upgrading pets and working on leveling them. It's not the fastest route by far but since you're picking up new pets along the way it's kinda worth multitasking.

Out of the list above, I consider the Giraffe Calf rare enough that I wouldn't clear it. As for the others... it really depends. If I see other people pet battling in the area I won't clear anything out. If it's empty as heck, I might. Like when I was farming the Stunted Yeti I never really saw anyone else in there other than questing players, so I did clear them knowing that the respawns would take around 15 min.

I try to avoid killing groups with rares in them though, even if it's not the harder to find pet.

Not a waste of time, personally I enjoy the hunt. :) And I wouldn't be swimming in stones if I actually used them!

I tend to have rather bad rng in pretty much all aspects of the game, including pets. Knowing how hard it can be to get them, if I see a hard to obtain pet (needs environmental condition, long spawn rate, only available certain days of the year etc) I will leave them alone for other players, or if I need one, use the search & forfeit method until I get a nice one. Not everyone does this, but there is probably others who do the same and the next pet I come across as a rare could be the result of someone deciding to leave it for those who can use it ^_^

Definitely. Since I'm still working on obtaining the pets from around Pandaria, as well as levelling the pets I do have, multitasking is a great solution. But I'll still do the dailies after the reset first, then continue on to pet hunting afterwards, so It's all over the place :)
