So Many Names, So Few Pets.

Post by Thralla » November 18th, 2012, 3:05 pm

This morning, I finally got around to naming my Snowy Owl. I caught her early on a Sunday morning at sunrise so I gave her the Welch name of Gwawr which means "Dawn". As I was looking this up, I realized, that for all the talk of names, I've never seen the website I use mentioned here on Warcraftpets.

For years I have gone to www.20000-names.com for inspiration. I've gotten hunter pet names, character names and companion pet names there. I've also used it for names outside of Wow.

*There is an annoying add that pops up with the first click you make on the home page every time you visit the website. Considering the amount of work that has gone into the site and that it has been around for a while, I don't begrudge the add and click it off without thinking about it.

Does anyone else have a favorite resource for finding names?

I'm also a fan of 2000-names! Despite it's annoying ads, it's one of the best resources I have discovered.

I also use the fantastic onomastikon compiled by Kate Monk: http://www.gaminggeeks.org/Resources/KateMonk/
It's got thousands of names sorted into their places of origin, plus pronunciation guides and brief excerpts about the history and evolution of naming practices in certain cultures. It's one of the most complete naming guides I have ever found.

More than I can post, but here are a couple -

http://legitbabenames.wordpress.com/

http://www.pantheon.org/ also http://www.pantheon.org/areas/bestiary/articles.html

http://www.thinkbabynames.com/

http://www.eaudrey.com/myth/ also http://www.eaudrey.com/myth/Places/index.htm

As you can see from the links, I like mythological names and unusual baby names. Another thing I do is check the names of prehistoric ancestors of that particular animal to see if any had fun names, or just more info on the animal, or native names for it. If something is colorful, I might look up the names of flowers or whatever it reminds me of. This isn't pets, but a couple of my undead are named after mummies in museums. I love finding the perfect name!
Some of my best friends are imaginary…
