It wasn't until I randomly looted the Phoenix Hatchling that I became addicted to companion pets. Originally, I thought they were kind of fun, but just sought a few random pets that I thought were interesting.
The Phoenix changed all that and I have been an addict ever since. I love the pets, I love to choose one at random to be the "pet of the day" and I love farming the oh-so-difficult ones to obtain.
My greatest regret is not working to obtain the Spirit of Competition when I had the chance a few years ago.
Not sure how I feel about the upcoming Companion pet changes with MoP. I never thought of my companions as "fighters" before. We shall see. Happy pet hunting, All!
