Well, I'll start by letting you know that my main character (whose collection is tracked here) is a Worgen Hunter on The Venture Co server, named Laminna. Feel free to message me in-game as I love meeting other mini-pet collectors/enthusiasts.
My parents are both art collectors and collecting seems to be a genetic trait, as I love to collect things as well.
I knew from the moment I found out about the mini-pets in World of Warcraft that, should I decide to play WoW (I was trying to choose an MMO at the time to play; my decision should be obvious. =P ), I would be a mini-pet collector and enthusiast. This was just before the original closed beta, which happened to be the start of my WoW playing.
I've done my best to collect every pet I can, and am still working on the ones I can add to my collection. Currently, there is only one possibly* one-time-only pet I have missed, the Spirit of Competition.
My current efforts are being directed towards the Fox Kit. I'm also working on the remaining archaeology pets I need.
*I'm not entirely convinced this pet will never be available again. All the other one-time-only small pets in the game are Bind to Account, where as this one is Bind on Pick-up. This leads me to believe it will be made available again in the future. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed hoping that it will be.
