There levels seem to change from between 1 - 11. I have not seen higher. And there secondary pets to the battle can be Adder, Cockroach, Crow (rarely it seems and I have only had poor quality so far), sea gull and rat.

I eventually got a lvl 9 poor quality one after a long time pet battleing the fireflies. I then got 2 more all poor quality. Unsure if only poor quality but the levels seem to change from between lvl1 - lvl11. I go mine in the end after about 20 - 30 fights. But maybe im unlucky ^^.

The fireflies are quite sparce but seem to spawn by the time your back at the start of your hunting trial.

The fireflies other secondarys can be rat, adder, sea gull or cockroach it seems.
