Found mine as a secondary to an infected fawn just north of dalaran crater (on the coast).
Appears as both its own encounter and as a seconday/tertiary battle. Got mine as a tertiary from a golden Civet just south of the lake at Golden Pagoda.
Same, I've searched for days and I never saw a single rare. Several other reports on wowhead are the same. Clouded Hedgehog, Jungle Grub and Silent Hedgehog all bugged.
>< after over 100 battles (I didn't notice they were all uncommon cuz I was on vent chatting it up)...finally caught on that something wa amiss, and checked here. /sigh oh well, I got the rares for everything else in the are so all good :D
Per my experiences:
1) Grotto Vole does not spawn in caves
2) Grotto Vole does not spawn as it's own critter encounter. It's a secondary battle when you encounter other critters.
3) They can appear in any battle encounter. Not restricted by location as I checked everywhere farming for a rare one and have encountered them everywhere.
4) They do not show up on the Pet Tracker addon becuase they do not specifically spawn as a battle pet encounter.

474 pets and only about 150 are not rare. Working on that tho :) There should really be an achievement for having over 300 rare pets. I mean seriously...I feel very accomplished ^^
